New website for Indigenous employment at Telstra | Telstra Exchange

Indigenous-employment-site_hero

Hi all, I hope you?re well! Here?s my latest update on our work around Indigenous employment at Telstra.

In April, we launched our new Indigenous Employment site as part of the Telstra Careers website. This exciting new site includes the employment and career journeys of our Indigenous Employment Ambassadors, details of upcoming community events, my Telstra Exchange Blogs, Telstra?s Reconciliation Action Plan, and a search engine for all vacant roles at Telstra. You can even register for job alerts.?Take a look at the site and share with your network, community or family. We hope this site will help us connect with more Indigenous job seekers and their families and promote Telstra as a great place for our mob to work.

For their contributions to building this new site, I would like to thank the communities from Townsville, Darwin, Geelong and Western Sydney, various members of the National Indigenous Corporate Network, and last but not least, our very own Indigenous employees at Telstra because if it wasn?t for you we would not have been able to do this work.

Being inclusive is part of who we are at Telstra. We believe in treating all people with respect and dignity. To connect this message with our people and customers, we proudly signed up to support the Australian Human Rights Commission?s (AHRC) ?Racism: It Stops with Me? campaign in March.? We hope that by taking part in this campaign we can help to make sure more people recognise racism is unacceptable in our community. As part of our combined support of this campaign, Adam Goodes recently posted a blog on Telstra Exchange ahead of National Reconciliation Week called ?Stand up against racism?.

On 18 May, I attended the Mt Druitt, Western Sydney Aboriginal Careers & Community Open Day event. The Western Sydney Aboriginal Job Compacts Steering Committee partnered with the Mt Druitt and District Reconciliation Group to stage this open day alongside the annual reconciliation walk and festival.?The theme was??It?s your future? and the aim was to provide an event where jobseekers, families, community organisations, businesses and key government agencies could interact in a relaxed, respectful and supportive, but purposeful, environment focused on employment, education and training.

This was a great opportunity for Telstra to engage directly with the Western Sydney Indigenous community to showcase a range of employment opportunities and career pathways to enhance career aspirations, skills and confidence.

Another exciting milestone for Telstra is the increased presence of our Traineeships on our careers website. The site has a wealth of information that includes job alerts, selection processes, different traineeships that Telstra offer as well as hearing from our very own Indigenous Trainee Lo Murphy who completed a Technician traineeship and is now currently a Team Manager in Rockhampton.

Last but not least I just wanted to give you an update on how the Indigenous School-Based Traineeship program is progressing. We currently have 14 school-based trainees and three full-time trainees located across the country in Operations, Human Resources, Telstra Digital, Telstra Country Wide and Telstra Business. All trainees work towards Certificate 2 or 3 qualifications in Information Technology, Business Services or Retail. The program gives trainees transferrable skills so that if there is no opportunity within their business unit, they can apply for ?opportunities? in other parts of Telstra. To date, all trainees have settled in extremely well and are great assets to our company. They have built strong relationships with their teams and managers and are leading the way to not only commence their career paths, but also demonstrate to their potential to the business. Very soon, we?ll be determining the locations for opportunities in 2014, so watch out for more information coming soon from our traineeship partners Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) and AFL Sports Ready. If there are any students moving into Year 11 next year, please contact either AES or AFL Sports Ready to register interest as opportunities will be confirmed and announced in the very near future.

Well that?s it for now. I hope you enjoy the blog and I do look forward to updating you again on the exciting work we?re doing. I will leave you with a simple thought that summarises our focus ? ?every time a new Indigenous person commences at Telstra we take another step towards closing the gap?.

Until next time, take care!
