Have you heard of a portfolio career? According to Dictionary.com, a portfolio career is ?a tapestry of a variety of eclectic employment experiences; employment in a series of short-contract or part-time positions.? The term appears more popular in Europe than it does here in the U.S., as I?ve seen it referenced in more articles and noticed classes and groups forming around the concept. Also, most of the portfolio career books in Amazon.com are selling in pounds, not dollars.
It wasn?t until I read about portfolio careers that I realized I have built one for myself! I do career coaching for individuals in my own business and I also work as a recruiter and trainer. Having three part-time jobs is the perfect way for me to meet my financial, freedom, and flexibility goals.
What fascinates me about portfolio careers is the people like myself who pursue them as a choice, rather than a circumstance. Certainly, with long-term unemployment, many people are taking whatever options are available to them for making money. And working multiple part-time jobs or contracts are one way to get some cash in the door.
But there are many others pursuing a portfolio career as a choice: a reflection of their many interests, desire for freedom and flexibility, and unwillingness to depend on a single source of income.
The intersection between scanners and people with portfolio careers is a beautiful thing. I?ve written about scanners before ? These are people with intense curiosity, multiple interests, and a love for learning. The term comes from author Barbara Sher, who wrote ?Refuse to Choose,? sort of a scanner?s bible. Most scanners feel hemmed in whenever they?re asked to do just one thing, and their interests change frequently. Portfolio careers give scanners the perfect vehicle for exploring their interests and making a living.
