Samsung Continuum gets update to Android 2.2.2!
We're sitting here smiling because the Samsung Continuum is in the midst of receiving not one, but two updates that end with the phone being upgraded to Android 2.2. Yes. We're excited about a Froyo update.
The Continuum, as you may recall, was a crazy little phone that came out in late 2010 (we actually got our hands on it a few months before it was announced) that was running Android 2.1 and featured a crazy little secondary display just below the capacitive buttons. It was an interesting idea, but it never really took off and the Continuum was left to wither and die. (Read our full Samsung Continuum review.)
Now here we are in February 2012 -- some three major versions of Android later -- and the Continuum is being updated to Android 2.2 Froyo. It's actually coming in the form of two updates. The first is the Froyo update itself (software version EB01). The second update (software version EC09) brings a bunch of improvements, including the ability to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, among others. We've got them listed after the break.
So to all you Samsung Continuum owners out there, today we raise our glasses to you. Enjoy.

Birds in uncertain climates are more likely to stray from their mates

Married people may pledge to stay faithful through good times and bad, but birds sing a different tune ? when weather is severe or uncertain, birds are more likely to stray from their mates, says a new study by researchers working at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center and Columbia University.
The results could mean more marital strife for birds coping with climate change, the researchers say.
Divorce and infidelity are a normal part of life for most birds, which typically nest with one partner for a few months or years, but may have chicks out of 'wedlock' or move on to new mates between breeding seasons.
"Most apparently monogamous birds end up having multiple partners," said lead author Carlos Botero, who conducted the study while at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, and is now a postdoctoral fellow at the Initiative in Biocomplexity at North Carolina State University.
Botero and his colleague Dustin Rubenstein of Columbia University wanted to find out if bird divorce and infidelity were more or less likely in dicey climates.
To find out, they studied records of the mating habits of hundreds of bird species, focusing on species where males and females work together to raise their chicks ? a large data set that included swallows, chickadees, blue birds, falcons, warblers, sparrows, ducks, geese and gulls.
For each species in their data set, they measured the rate of infidelity ? defined as the fraction of nests containing chicks resulting from an 'affair' ? as well as the rate of divorce, or the fraction of birds that changed partners between breeding seasons.
When they combined this data with temperature and precipitation records from weather stations near each species' nesting sites, they found something interesting ? birds that breed in changeable climates were more likely to cheat.
Infidelity was more common in species that breed in areas with more dramatic seasonal swings between warm and cold. When seasons are severe, promiscuity may pay off as a way of increasing the genetic diversity of the chicks, Botero said. "Mating with multiple partners improves the chances that at least one chick will have the genes to cope with the variable conditions to come," he explained.
The effect was greater for divorce. Birds in unpredictable climates were more likely to cast off their current mate and seek a new partner for the next breeding season, even at the expense of losing valuable breeding time before they paired up again.
"The quality of a potential mate depends on the context," Botero explained. In the Galapagos Islands, for example, finches with bigger beaks are better at finding food during dry periods, when larger, drier, harder-to-crush seeds are more important, whereas finches with smaller beaks do better during wet periods.
The perfect partner during one set of conditions may be a so-so mate at another. But when the length, timing or intensity of annual weather cycles is less certain, it may be harder for a bird to predict, based on conditions during the courting phase, what conditions are likely to be like during the chick-rearing phase. "The more unpredictable the environment is, the more likely birds are to make mistakes [in picking a mate], and the more likely they are to divorce," Botero said.
What does this mean for birds coping with climate change?
"As a result of climate change weather patterns have become more unpredictable, and the frequency of extreme weather events has increased," Botero said.
Whether the findings apply to humans is still unknown, but in birds "we would expect marital strife will become much more common," he added.

WVU settles Big East lawsuit, will join Big 12 (AP)
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? West Virginia University announced Tuesday it has settled a lawsuit with the Big East for an unspecified amount, clearing the way for the conference power Mountaineers to join the Big 12 in July in time for the fall football season.
Athletic Director Oliver Luck said the terms of the deal were confidential and WVU wouldn't release details. But Luck said no state, taxpayer, tuition or other academic dollars will be used in the settlement.
A person familiar with the agreement said the settlement totaled $20 million but did not know how much money would come from the university and how much the Big 12 may contribute. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not announced with the agreement.
Luck said the funding will come only from private sources and money that athletics raised independently. WVU has already paid half of the required $5 million exit fee.
Luck said the new relationship puts WVU among peers that are also large, public, flagship institutions for their states and have strong academic and research programs. Athletically, it's a "challenging and competitive" group, he said, populated by schools with "tremendous legacies, passionate fan bases."
It's also lucrative: Luck said WVU should get about $18 million to $19 million a year in television payouts, about double what it gets from the Big East. Payments are being prorated for the first three years at 50 percent, 67 percent and 87 percent, he said, reaching 100 percent in the fourth year.
"It's a very healthy television payout, and it's important we maintain our self-sufficient status," Luck said. "With this move, we'll be in an excellent position to do so."
A spokesman for the Big 12 didn't immediately comment, but the conference released its football schedule about an hour after the announcement. West Virginia makes its Big 12 debut Sept. 29 at home against Baylor.
The Mountaineers and their explosive offense went 10-3 last season and finished ranked in the Top 25. West Virginia capped off the season with a record-setting 70-33 victory over Clemson in the Orange Bowl.
Luck didn't rule out the possibility of a nonconference game against archrival Pitt after the 2012 season but said that both schools have nine nonconference games and a matchup would be "difficult to schedule."
"It's pretty obvious there will be no Backyard Brawl" in 2012, he said.
WVU sued the Big East in Monongalia County Circuit Court in Morgantown in November, challenging its bylaws in a bid to join the Big 12 in time for the 2012 season.
The Big East countersued in Rhode Island four days later, arguing that WVU had breached its contract with the conference and should remain in the Big East for another two years as required in the bylaws. In late December, the judge there denied WVU's motion to dismiss.
Big East Commissioner John Marinatto had repeatedly said West Virginia would not be allowed to leave until the 2014 football season.
But in a statement Tuesday, Marinatto said the board of directors voted to terminate WVU's membership in the conference as of June 30. The board agreed to the deal because WVU was willing to drop its lawsuit and pay an exit fee "well in excess of that required by the bylaws," he said.
WVU also has agreed to have the West Virginia court enter a judgment that declares the Big East's bylaws "valid and enforceable," which Marinatto told The Associated Press was the most important thing to his board.
"The bylaws are the foundation of how the conference governs itself," he said. "To have the court in West Virginia acknowledge their validity of enforceability obviously reinforces the premise that the conference is viable moving forward, and in a position to do so."
Continuing to fight West Virginia "would have only made the lawyers happy," he said.
Boise State, Central Florida, Houston, Memphis, San Diego State University, Southern Methodist University and Navy have all recently joined the conference.
"The future for the Big East Conference has never been brighter," he said.
But the Big East still has work to do to figure out how next season will play out. Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced in September they are leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference, but have said they will not challenge the Big East's notification rules.
Marinatto said he "would not be open to a conversation" with either school about departing this year. "But given the strength and speed of our expansion efforts, I think our board might be open to a discussion about 2013."
That leaves the Big East with seven football teams for 2012 and a hole in the schedule that could leave its remaining members scrambling to find a game so late ? unless one of its future members can be convinced to join a year early.
Boise State, which is joining the Big East in football only, has been approached about leaving the Mountain West early.
"There are challenges on the table right now," Marinatto said. "... We're looking at various scenarios in order to address that. We have plans in place to deal with each possibility."
Those possibilities include an eight-team league next season, he said.
The urgency of the WVU and Big East lawsuits and the eventual settlement was driven by football, but the conference realignment affects other West Virginia sports. The Mountaineers must find a home for their men's soccer team because the Big 12 doesn't sponsor the sport.
Teams in rifle, wrestling and women's gymnastics at West Virginia compete in other conferences besides the Big East.
Big 12 membership requires WVU to add a men's sport, but Luck said he hasn't determined which it will be or when it will happen.

Say 'I do' to strong relationships | The Hand

Love is in the air this week, so my thoughts have naturally turned to my wonderful husband, Steve.
We?ve known each other for 30 years and been married for 17. I?ve enjoyed the ride and learned so much from the experience of being Steve?s wife, and I?ve concluded ? surprise, surprise ? that nurturing a good marriage shares a lot of similarities with nurturing strong business relationships.
Here are few observations.
1. No one can read your mind.
My family loves to tease me about my ability to communicate what I?m thinking very clearly ? for better or for worse.
Thankfully, Steve is as direct as me and we communicate well, sometimes peacefully and sometimes more enthusiastically, but we are always talking.
In your business life, it?s easy to sit in your cubicle and stew about being overlooked for an opportunity or to avoid asking for help, a promotion or a raise because it feels uncomfortable.
But no one will see you or hear you if you don?t speak up about what you?re thinking, what you need, or how a situation may be affecting you.
You owe it to yourself and your organization to express yourself.
2. When you stop measuring what you?re getting, you get more.
You?ve heard that in a successful relationship, both parties give 100 percent. But that?s not all that?s required. You have to give at least 100 percent and you have to do it with no expectation that your partner will do the same.
There have been times in our marriage when I have needed more from Steve than he has from me, and vice versa, but he never keeps score. Once you get into ?If I do this, you?ll do that? your relationship gets transactional, and that?s a recipe for disaster.
Business relationships prosper when two parties come together for mutually beneficial goals. That doesn?t mean, though, that each party will be giving the same amount at all times.
There may be times, for instance, when you are trying to win a piece of business, that you may decide to give away some education or resources without pay as part of the sales process.
These kinds of gestures show a commitment to a long-term engagement over a mercenary desire to close the deal.
3. There is great strength in showing some humility.
One of the hardest things to do in a relationship is to admit wrongdoing and apologize sincerely. Even in the best partnership, you will hurt your partner and he or she will hurt you.
These occasions call for a humble apology that is without excuses or finger pointing. Steve has always been quick to say a simple, sincere ?I?m sorry? ? and I?m trying to get better!
You will mess up in your professional life, too. If you can acknowledge your errors without throwing someone else under the bus, you will build long-lasting, productive relationships.
4. Maintaining perspective isn?t always easy, but it?s critical.
Steve and I have dealt with surgeries and health crises, parent illnesses and the everyday stresses of managing careers and raising our two daughters, who were born 17 months apart. Things can get messy, and tempers can flare.
But Steve has always figured out a way ? maybe not right away, but eventually ? to bring humor into the situation. It?s been a saving grace in helping us both keep our heads on straight.
Having a sense of humor and perspective in your business life will take you far. Keep this in mind with employees, clients and prospects and watch your career benefit.
5. Sharing the same values is important for enduring relationships.
I grew up down the street from Steve and we both went to Marian High School and then graduated from Boston College and Holy Cross, respectively. We were raised in a similar way and came to our marriage with a common set of values.
These similarities in our background have translated to a compatible approach to life that has made a lot of decisions and situations easier.
In your business life, you will meet people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and you can successfully do business with any of them.
The key to success is whether you work from a shared set of values, which makes it much easier to build productive engagements.
If you sense a strong disconnect in values with someone ? he may approach business relationships and conduct himself in a way that makes you uncomfortable, for example, or she may value profits over people ? it?s important to recognize it.
6. Showing is always more powerful than telling.
Steve is not overly effusive with his feelings, but I never doubt how much he loves me because he shows it every day.
This may mean offering to take the extra carpool shift, pouring me a chilled glass of wine or walking the dog on an extra cold night.
It also means working hard every day at his job to provide a good living for us. He may not do a lot of talking about it, but he doesn?t have to ? my life is infinitely better every day because of all he does for me and our family.
There is nothing more annoying than a company that brags about their customer service and then fails to deliver. Or co-workers who have to regale everyone with the extra time they put into a project.
Doers do better in this world than talkers, it?s just a fact. Enough said on that.
7. Giving someone space can close any distance between you.
Steve and I are so close, I believe, because we separate frequently. We each have a lot going on as a couple and a family and we love to be together, but we also have a lot going on individually ? from weekends away with our friends to hobbies we pursue to charity work we do, we value our individual time as much as our couple and family time.
It?s very attractive to me to see Steve maintain his friends and interests throughout our marriage.
This observation applies well to a sales or job hunting situation. While it?s easy to get anxious and aggressively pursue a prospective client or employer, sometimes the best thing to do is to give them a bit of space.
You have to walk the fine line, just as you do in a marriage, of not giving someone so much space that they think you are not interested, but enough space so that they see you as a competent, confident person who has a lot going on.
A good business relationship can be almost as valuable as a strong marriage, so think hard about who you engage with professionally, and how you do it.
