Little sign of economic stress in North Korea's well-swept capital

By Se Young Lee

PYONGYANG (Reuters) - North Korea's economy is believed to be virtually lifeless after decades of mismanagement, isolation and sanctions aimed at foiling its nuclear ambitions but its showcase capital, Pyongyang, shows no hint of calamity.

Secretive North Korea allowed in a large group of foreign journalists last week to cover Saturday's lavish celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the truce that ended the 1950-53 Korean War, which North Korea says it won.

No expense seems to have been spared for monuments to the conflict upon which the state was founded.

A cemetery for war dead unveiled at a ceremony on Thursday, that leader Kim Jong-un presided over, looked immaculate, with grave stones bearing portraits of the dead and images of the medals they won.

A new war museum, opened to the public with much fanfare on Saturday, boasts top-of-the line television displays and elaborate recreations of battle sites.

A big statue of North Korea's founding father, Kim Il-sung, grandfather of the current leader, looms over visitors to the museum dedicated to the war South Koreans blame the elder Kim for starting.

North Korean visitors took pictures with Japanese digital cameras.

Government minders closely chaperoned the foreign journalists throughout their stay and the visitors largely had to rely on glimpses of Pyongyang from the press bus to get an impression of life.

There is no hint of the numbing poverty, hunger and repression that North Korean defectors say define life in the countryside.

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency says in its global fact book that North Korea's annual per capita income was $1,800 in 2011, in purchasing power terms, the 197th in the world and about 5.5 percent that of South Korea.

A famine in the 1990s is estimated to have killed a million people. More than one-quarter of children are chronically malnourished, according to a U.N.-backed survey published in March.

But none of that is evident in Pyongyang.

OLD CARS, LITTLE SHOPS

Residents, by definition regime loyalists because the government decides who can live there, rely on a rusting cable car system to get around. Long lines of people pack in at busy times of day.

People walk a lot along the largely empty, well-swept streets. In recent days, women held up parasols of different colors to shade themselves from the summer sun.

Most cars are old European or Japanese models but there are some newer ones including Toyota Land Cruisers, and Mercedes-Benz and Audi sedans.

Perhaps surprisingly, a lot of little shops are scattered across the city, in particular book and clothing stores. There are also restaurants and tiny shops selling nothing but locally produced soft drinks, in apple, grape and peach flavors.

Many people were sitting relaxing in the shade in squares and along sidewalks. Some chatted on mobile phones.

Apartment blocks may look a bit run-down, just as in many other Asian cities, but many residents had flower pots on their balconies.

It is after sunset that North Korea's economic difficulties are more evident.

Large parts of Pyongyang have no street lights, and apparently a patchy electricity supply. Specks of light floating in the darkness look like fireflies, but prove to be bicycle lamps.

It goes without saying in the capital of one of the world's most tightly controlled countries that there is no hint of any unrest or frustration with the regime led by the 30-year-old Kim.

"He has been in place for more than a year and a half now; we see no sign of any dissent or opposition or internal discomfort over his position as leader," one diplomat said of the young leader.

While Kim has been more visible, especially over the past week when he looked confident and relaxed presiding over the anniversary celebrations, there is no indication of any change in the policies set by his father and grandfather.

"There's been a change in style, but not substance," said the diplomat, who declined to be identified.

London: Kidney transplant patient wins immigration appeal hearing

?

On Friday, 26 July, judges in the Upper Immigration and Asylum Tribunal rejected an appeal from the Home Secretary, Theresa May, that Roseline Akhalu, a 49-year old former postgraduate student from Leeds should be returned to Nigeria where she would have faced the prospect of death ?within weeks?.

On hearing news of the judgment Roseline Akhalu told her friends and supporters: ?Thank you everybody for the support, for the prayers, for the publicity, for everything. ?Hopefully the UKBA will let matters rest at this stage.?

Judge Southern on behalf of the Upper Tribunal in rejecting the Home Office?s appeal said: ?We are satisfied that the [original] judge did not make an error of law?the circumstances here were, if not truly unique, so exceptional as to stand out from the ordinary run of cases where a claimant complains of being disadvantaged by a comparative lack of medical care in his or her own country. That was not the basis of the?decision here?.

Tessa Gregory, a solicitor at Public Interest Lawyers, representing Ms Akhalu said:??We are delighted that the Upper Tribunal has dismissed the Home Secretary?s appeal and found in Rose?s favour. The facts of Rose?s case are exceptional and have been rightly recognized as such. It must now be time for the Home Secretary to accept that it?would be unlawful to deport Rose to a certain and lonely death in Nigeria. No more money should be wasted on further appeals and Rose should be allowed to get on with her life within the community that has given her such incredible support throughout this ordeal.?

Esme Madill on behalf of the Save Rose Campaign declared: ?We are overjoyed with today?s judgment. Roseline has had to endure months of needless worry and anxiety because of this groundless and expensive appeal by the Home Secretary, which has aggravated Rose?s fragile health condition. We really hope that the Home Office now has?the sense to admit defeat so that Rose can get on with her life and continue contributing to her community as she has been doing for so many years.?

Rosaline's parish in Leeds, the SVP and actor Colin Firth were among thousands of people who campaigned for her to stay. To read an earlier report see:?http://www.indcatholicnews.com/news.php?viewStory=22947

Castro agrees to plea deal: Life without parole plus 1,000 years

At his court hearing, Ohio kidnapper Ariel Castro said he understood he would never be released from prison under the terms of his plea agreement and added, "I knew I was pretty much going to get the book thrown at me."

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man accused of imprisoning and raping three women for a decade, pleaded guilty Friday and agreed to serve life without parole ? sparing the city an agonizing trial and perhaps the women from reliving their nightmare on the witness stand.

Under a plea agreement outlined in court, Castro agreed to a life sentence plus 1,000 years. The deal allows him to avoid the death penalty and forestalls a trial that was scheduled to start in two weeks.

?I knew I was going to get pretty much the book thrown at me,? Castro told Judge Michael J. Russo of Cuyahoga County court in Ohio. Asked whether he knew that he was forfeiting any hope of getting out of prison before he dies, Castro said: ?I don?t think there?s any reason.?

Castro, 53, was accused of abducting the women from the Cleveland streets between 2002 and 2004, then holding them in his home for a decade. Investigators say he raped and impregnated them and sometimes chained them in the basement. Castro fathered a daughter, now 6, with Berry, authorities have said.

Under the plea deal, Castro must also forfeit the modest home that prosecutors said he turned into a horror house. Prosecutors said the county planned to tear it down soon. Castro will be formally sentenced later at a hearing in which the three women will have the chance to address him.

The three ? Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight ? escaped in May after Berry broke partway through a door and screamed for help while Castro was out of the house. Lawyers for the women say they simply want the matter behind them.

Castro faced 977 criminal counts, including attempted murder, a charge brought by Ohio prosecutors after one of the women told investigators that Castro forced her to miscarry by punching her in the stomach. Forty of those counts were either dropped Friday or merged into others.

He had pleaded not guilty July 17 at a hearing in which the judge had to ask him to keep his eyes open. Prosecutors said they were considering the death penalty but never announced a decision.

The women broke their silence in a three-minute video July 9. In it, Knight said: ?I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face, and my head held high, and my feet firmly on the ground.?

Castro, who has been held on $8 million bail, appeared in an orange prison suit for the hearing Friday. He also wore glasses in court for the first time, and told the judge they helped.

Castro and Russo, the judge, engaged in a lengthy question-and-answer designed to make sure Castro understood the plea agreement. When Russo asked him about a criminal count that classified him as a sexually violent predator, he answered: ?The violent part I don?t agree with, but yes.?

Don't blame Santa: Xbox and PlayStation supply probably won't meet demand ... again

Video games

When it comes to shipping video game consoles to gamers on time, "I don't think the management of the supply chain is their core competency," R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian told NBC News.

Amazon

When it comes to shipping video game consoles to gamers on time, "I don't think the management of the supply chain is their core competency," R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian told NBC News.

We've all heard the story: the long lines of Apple fans lining up outside the store, breathlessly awaiting that first chance to get their hands on the new iPhone. But when it comes to video game consoles, the throngs of die-hard gamers are all the more feverish simply because the wait has been longer, the anticipation higher.

Despite the fact that the video game industry is now on its eighth generation of console hardware, it still seems like every new release of an Xbox or PlayStation is, on some level, a disaster. Pre-order quotas are quickly maxed out, and impatient gamers turn to eBay or (God forbid) Craigslist to pay an extra premium just to get their gadget of choice in time for the holiday season.

Even the Wii U, which Nintendo itself has admitted isn't selling all that well, faced supply setbacks when it launched last year. And it doesn't look like things are shaping up to be any different for the $499 Xbox One or the $399 PlayStation 4 ? both consoles received record-breaking pre-orders, and the gaming press has already started warning of possible shortages after Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian predicted as much in an interview with GameSpot.

Judging by the excitement for the consoles, the demand is clearly there. So why is meeting it with a proper supply so tricky? Sebastian told NBC News that with all the moving parts that Sony and Microsoft have to coordinate in time for a tight holiday release window, things get, well, "complex."

"There's a lot of gyration in the supply chain," Sebastian said. "It's hard to get everything together at the same time."

What, exactly, is "gyration in the supply chain"?
Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, explained. "The manufacturers have to plan production for two or three years out, so they tend to plan to make 10 (million) to 12 million consoles annually at the outset, and adjust upward or downward based on demand," Pachter told NBC News in an email. "They probably haven?t commenced manufacture yet, and will probably do so in mid-August ? notice we haven?t seen leaked pictures from the assembly line yet. That means around 1 million per month, and it takes time to ship to retail. We?ll probably get 2 ? 3 million of each globally at retail by year-end."

"If you think demand will exceed that figure, there will be a shortage," Pachter added. With major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon and GameStop vying for more launch units, "allocations are especially tough, because everyone wants as many as they can get."

Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games at economic research firm IHS Global Insight, agreed, adding that the international dimension of global launch only makes organizing the supply chain all the more difficult.

"All console companies aim to have a smooth launch with as few 'lumps' in the distribution chain as possible," Harding-Rolls wrote in an email to NBC News. "Distribution smoothness depends on a number of factors: amount of total inventory (how quickly factories can build products that don't fall apart), regional allocations (how many sales are expected across major sales territories) and sales channel negotiations (agreements with retail stores)."

When a product launches across multiple regions at the same time, he said, consumer electronics companies "are more likely to get 'lumpy' distribution which will lead to shortages within specific channels because it is a more complex go-to-market process." When a shortage occurs in one region or another, "the speed at which manufacturers can respond to squeezed supply depends on willingness to spend on quicker shipments and availability of additional product."

Jordan Selburn of IHS told NBC News that this kind of bottleneck dramatically hampered Sony's initial launch of the PlayStation 3 in 2006 because the console's Blu-ray was built with blue laser diodes, a "brand-new piece of tech that just ran into a shortage." This time around, however, Selburn says that the technology inside both of the next-gen systems isn't groundbreaking enough to make production as difficult or time-consuming.

"They're not encountering fundamental questions about: can it be built?" Selburn said of Sony and Microsoft. As a result, he thinks any real difference in initial sales will come down to how gamers react to software policies like Microsoft's controversial online requirements ? an issue that Selburn estimates gives Sony twice the demand for the PlayStation 4 than what Microsoft now has for the Xbox One.

The 'Apple effect'?
But that doesn't mean there won't still be impatient gamers this holiday season, Melissa Otto, an analyst at TIAA-CREF, told NBC News. While all the sound and fury about having to wait a few extra weeks for a console might frustrate the individual consumer, Otto said that, from a broader perspective, it's actually great marketing.

"I'm not sure it's something they struggle with," Otto said of console manufacturers supplying enough units. "I would argue that it's actually something they create. Whenever a new console cycle begins, these companies have a tendency to limit the supply to gauge the demand and create buzz. And then once the buzz starts and the momentum kicks up, the supply continues to be limited which magnifies the value of the actual product."

It's easy to see what Otto means. Neither Sony nor Microsoft would comment specifically about their current launch plans, but both companies told NBC News that demand for their respective consoles has been strong.

"Consumer reaction to PS4 has been phenomenal," a representative from Sony told NBC News in a statement. "We will try our best to meet all demand needs, but it?s very possible that demand will outstrip supply at launch." A spokesperson for Microsoft, meanwhile, wrote in an e-mailed statement that "we are pleased with the enthusiasm consumers have shown as Xbox One preorders are trending ahead of Xbox 360 during the same time period and have sold out at most major U.S. retailers."

Other analysts agreed with Otto's assessment that Sony and Microsoft might be aiming for what she called "the Apple effect" in their statements about demand outstripping supply. But Sebastian, who still estimates that Microsoft is better equipped to turn out as many as two times more Xbox One units than Sony is prepared to release of the PlayStation 4, said that the long life-cycle of these products has always made their launches a bit more bumbling.

"I don't think the management of the supply chain is their core competency," Sebastian said.

T-Mobile temporarily drops upfront device cost, most models going for no money down

Zero dollars down, Simple Choice and Jump? T-Mobile must be downright crazy! Either that, or it's a carrier struggling to make a serious impact on a market dominated by two juggernauts -- juggernauts who also came out with early upgrade plans of their own within a week of Jump's debut. T-Mobile's "back at it," according to its press material, dropping the entry price on a slew of devices down to zero, effectively spreading out the payments over 24 months. All told, the promotion includes smartphones, tablets and hotspots, and is open to folks who are "well-qualified" (check your credit statements if you have any questions on that front). The deal starts tomorrow and runs for a "limited time." Unsurprisingly, there's also some fine print attached (e.g., the 32GB and 64GB iPhone 5 isn't covered). The carrier's site can break down all of that for you, and there's also more info to be had in a press release after the break.

MoDaCo Switch public beta for HTC One now available

MoDaCo switch

Dual-boot between Sense and Google Play edition ROMs on your HTC One, with a single set of app data

MoDaCo Switch, revealed a couple of weeks ago, is a unique custom firmware allowing you to switch between HTC Sense and vanilla Android on the HTC One. The software comes as two ROMs in one, with a "Switch" app in the app drawer allowing you to hop between the two flavors of Android. Even more useful, MoDaCo Switch does all this with a single set of user data, meaning apps and accounts are shared between Sense and stock.

It's been in private testing for a few days, but today creator Paul O'Brien has released the current build — beta 8 — to the public. There's a little bit of initial setup to go through, so you'll want to check out the full list of installation instructions before you get started, even if you're familiar with flashing custom ROMs. It's also worth noting that right now only the GSM HTC One is officially supported in MoDaCo Switch.

We've been testing MoDaCo Switch on the European HTC One for the past couple of days, and we've found it works just as advertised. It's a great way to live in the Google Play ROM if you prefer the look and feel of vanilla Android, while having the ability to escape back to Sense if you need to use a certain feature, or if you just fancy a change. And when you do switch over, all your app data and accounts are preserved.

To get started, hit up the link below for download links and installation instructions. Good luck!

Deepstacks, Joker Gaming To Provide New Poker Programming ...

Parent company of the DeepStacks Poker Tour and poker webcasting company Joker Gaming have announced a partnership in hopes expand the popular online live-streaming cash game format of ?Live At The Bike? to casinos and card rooms anywhere.

Complete with RFID hole card displays, custom graphic packages, social media tie-ins and direct brand and sponsor options, the new venture is looking to be able to generate a wealth of online cash game poker content for consumers and the casinos that host them.

?With the proverbial dust of Black Friday having settled down a bit, more and more networks and gaming companies are looking not only for meaningful content but also an avenue to get 're-introduced? to the poker industry,? DeepStacks CEO Chris Torina told pokerfuse.

The plan is to offer any given casino the ability to broadcast their own version of ?Live At The Bike,? direct from their own cardroom floor, and stream it, live or archived, from a newly conceived DeepStacks TV online channel as well as the casino?s own website.

?One of our major priorities at DeepStacks is to create as much meaningful content on the web as possible. With people transitioning to online delivery of their favorite shows or even finding old clips of previous episodic content, it is our goal to be a leader on that platform for gaming.?

Currently, the new venture is looking to offer specialty programming. One-off broadcasts, quarterly events or side game action that accompanies a major tournament hosted by the casino are the types of content the newly branded ?Live!? is looking to produce. It has yet to be offered in a regular format, such as the bi-weekly ?Live At The Bike? which takes place at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles.

The combination of the two companies also allows for the combined talent resources. In an effort to ?not fix what isn?t broken? the new ?Live!? programming is set to utilize the stable of LATB commentary team with the addition of DeepStack Director of Poker Operations Tristan Wade and DeepStacks guests such as Michael ?The Grinder? Mizrachi, according to Torina.

The new service is expected to provide free on-demand archived events for the consumer, in addition to the live streams on the days of the events. DeepStacks and Joker Gaming are planning on announcing the first of their partners within the next month.

92% Fruitvale Station

All Critics (85) | Top Critics (32) | Fresh (78) | Rotten (7)

By using a fly-on-the-wall approach, Coogler is able to tell his story in a straightforward style that gets the message across without seeming preachy.

In naturalistic and unforced strokes, he allows Grant to exist as a complex, even contradictory human, inviting the audience simply to sit with his life, his loss and what they both meant.

Fruitvale is easy to see as something more than a movie - a diagnosis, perhaps, or a part of that sticky vortex we call the zeitgeist.

Oscar Grant had friends, he had a sister and a mother and a grandmother, a girlfriend, a child. In concise measures, Fruitvale Station shows us these connections, these bonds.

Grant's ordinary life seems eminently dramatic even without its place in history.

Coogler could've settled for an enraging, full-throttle melodrama, designed to boil your blood from beginning to end. But "Fruitvale Station" is better, more heartbreaking, than that.

There's plenty of riveting drama, including a gut-wrenching climax that elicits a powerful emotional resonance.

Sober, even-handed and quite moving.

Michael B. Jordan portrays Oscar Grant as a complex and real person, making Fruitvale Station more than just the story of a death. In fact, it's one full of life.

A devastating portrait of the fallibility of man and the importance of appreciating what one has while it's still here.

Where it could have been angry ... the film is instead clinical...

Many directors have trouble accomplishing something like this even when they're throwing character development in your face. To be able to succeed by using a standard "day in the life" approach makes it all the more incredible, and makes it a must-see.

A star-making performance by Michael B. Jordan.

Even though we know where this dark road travels, the remarkable Fruitvale Station still manages to be both sorrowful and suspenseful while also celebrating a life only half-lived.

Writer/director Ryan Coogler's debut feature, Fruitvale Station, is one of those first films that announces that a major talent has hit the scene.

A gut-wrenching, emotional powerhouse of a film, politically and socially resonant while also standing on its own as a compelling and often-heartbreaking story

A viscerally wrenching experience, filled with foreboding from the first frame but stylistically naturalistic.

Strives only for an emotional response rather than an intellectual one.

Coogler's goal is clear - to put a human face on Grant, to make him recognizable.

Though the film's ending is no mystery, the personal details are what make this story so absorbing and so moving - more so precisely because his fate is already known.

Driving a Car with Pliers As a Steering Wheel Is a Hilariously Dumb Idea

Imagine you're the police. Imagine you're in your police car. Imagine eating a donut. Imagine complaining about life to your partner. Imagine seeing a car with two obviously blown tires drive by. Imagine pulling that car over. Imagine seeing that the driver driving the car was using a makeshift steering wheel made from... locking pliers. Imagine how hard you would laugh.

Stuff reports:

Coca-Cola plans to start displaying the calories in its products on vending machines as a way of fighting obesity.

The beverage giant announced tonight it was was ?joining the front line? in the fight against obesity with a campaign set to launch tomorrow.

As part of the campaign, it will place transparent nutritional information in more places, including vending machines, and increase the availability of small bottles like its 300ml soft drink range.

It will also offer a wider selection of low-calorie products and help get people moving by supporting physical activity programmes.

I hate nanny state anti-obesity measures around banning certain foods from tuck-shops, advertising restrictions etc. But something I am passionate on is food and drinks showing the number of calories they have. This allows us adults to make informed choices.

I think alcohol should have calorie labels, and also retail food outlets should have available calorie counts for their food, should people request it.

People would be amazed at how much weight you can lose by simply being more knowledgeable about how many calories are in what you drink or eat.

Can I reserve a nightmare please?

I can feel it...creeping towards me...like the dark of the night...quietly catching me. It spreads without sound...pulling at me...tearing me apart...stranding me alone...it's so nogalistic yet dreadful ...that edgy voice...this cold air...those crystal blue eyes...every little thing...suffocating me...trapping me inside a labyrinth of memories...

Facebook for Every Phone, Made for Non-Smartphones, Has Been Downloaded 100 Million Times

FacebookFacebook announced that Facebook For Every Phone, a native app that works on feature phones, has been downloaded 100 million times. Facebook For Every Phone is an essential part of the company?s global strategy because more feature phones than smartphones are used in developing markets like India, Indonesia and the Philippines. In fact, for many consumers, feature phones may be their main or only point of access to the Internet. Facebook only recently began selling ads on its feature phone platform and makes very little money that way, but extending into countries with rapidly developing tech ecosystem may help Facebook counterbalance its declining or stagnant traffic in countries such as the U.S. and UK. Facebook had 751 million monthly active users on mobile as of March 31, 2013, an increase of 54% year-over-year.

Romo ramps up conditioning, makes it back for camp

OXNARD, Calif. (AP) ? Tony Romo was waiting in California when the Dallas Cowboys arrived for training camp.

Romo, who didn't take a real snap in offseason workouts after signing the richest contract in franchise history, finally returned for the first training camp practices Sunday after "uniquely running mountains" on the West Coast.

That's how owner Jerry Jones described his quarterback's efforts to get back in shape after a procedure to have a cyst removed from his back in April.

Romo says he tried to cram a full offseason of conditioning into the last month and a half, including what he called some "boot camp" training in California in the week and a half before his teammates joined him.

"I worked as hard as I could," Romo said. "I took that approach every day I woke up. I had to improve not just a little but a lot each day. I think that helped me get ready for today and hopefully for the beginning of the season."

It's been 10 years since Romo joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois, but he's not at the bottom of the depth chart anymore. Now he signs autographs on his way to the field for practice, then has all his throws analyzed by sideline observers looking for the slightest hint of how much the down time in the spring affected him.

And that's seven weeks before the start of the regular season.

"He'll tell you right now he just has to continue do the conditioning stuff necessary," coach Jason Garrett said. "When you're coming off an injury, that's always a big concern. You're trying to get the injured healed, but you've got make sure the conditioning is right. He's worked very hard at it."

Romo was an active observer during workouts at team headquarters in May and June, part of an expanding role that Jones first alluded to in a statement the day Romo signed a six-year, $108 million contract with $55 million guaranteed ? $3 million more than Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco got from Baltimore.

After finally acknowledging that he would be active in game-planning in an interview the week before camp, Romo flashed a little leadership while walking off the field at the end of Sunday's first practice.

It was just a walkthrough, and Romo was engaged in a detailed discussion with second-year tight end James Hanna as he walked through a crowd of reporters, pausing briefly to say he would talk to them later.

"We're just making a real conscious effort as an organization to say, 'Hey, let's get more out of this situation. Let's get more out of this guy' because we believe so strongly in him," Garrett said. "And it's been a real positive change for our football team."

The Cowboys said the decision to hold Romo out of offseason workouts was mostly precautionary, but Garrett said the recovery was a little tricky because it involved his back, which required him to be immobile.

Romo said it was just strange not to be able to throw.

"I used to throw for 345 days a year because I felt like you couldn't duplicate those days you missed," he said. "Every day you missed, I felt like I needed seven straight days to get back. I don't know that you can ever get that back. Saying that, I did everything I could to get myself ready to go."

The Cowboys will keep him on a football version of a pitch count, although they don't have any precise numbers and will simply be watching him closely.

"It's more communication, 'How you feeling?'" Garrett said. "And you also look at the ball. Does the ball look a little dead or tired? We'll communicate each and every day to come up with our plan."

But he's finished with his personal boot camp in the mountains.

Sympathy for China airport blast protester

BEIJING - Chinese citizens expressed support on Sunday for a disabled man who set off an explosion at Beijing's international airport, injuring himself in an apparent protest against police brutality.

Chinese security personnel move in to investigate the scene where a man in a wheelchair ignited a home-made explosive device at Beijing's international airport terminal 3 on Saturday, July 20, 2013, injuring himself but no others. (AFP photo)

Messages of support posted online came after reports said 34-year old Ji Zhongxing was driven to the act by a years-long battle for justice after being severely beaten by police.

Wheelchair-bound Ji warned passengers in the airport before detonating the small device late on Saturday in an apparent attempt to draw attention to his case without harming others, the Beijing News reported.

A policeman who rushed to the scene was the only other person injured in the explosion, the state-run China Radio International said.

"He warned those passing by ... what a good member of the public, who in this country is willing to stand up and say they are more righteous than him,"' Zhao Xiao, a professor at the Beijing Institute of Technology wrote on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo site.

"By warning others to move away, he is a good person ... I hope authorities will be understanding, or they will set off a vicious cycle," lawyer Yuan Yulai wrote.

"He was not as crazed as the police who beat him in the first place," another Sina Weibo user said.

Mr Ji moved from the eastern province of Shandong to work as a motorcycle driver in the southern city of Dongguan, where he was severely beaten by police staff in 2005, causing him to become disabled, according to multiple reports which could not be independently verified.

He had "lost all hope with society", following an unsuccessful battle for compensation, Hong Kong broadcaster Phoenix TV reported.

Mr Ji was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital where he had his left hand amputated, the broadcaster said.

Lawyers for Mr Ji could not be reached on Sunday. Phoenix TV said at least one lawyer could not comment due to "pressure" from the local government in Dongguan.

Reports said Mr Ji had grown frustrated at China's "petitioning" system, which allows citizens to file complaints directly with government departments.

Petitioners whose complaints have been ignored have for decades staged protests across China, with some using violent acts to draw attention to their case.

An unemployed man who had been a petitioner killed 47 people last month by setting off an explosion on a bus in the coastal city of Xiamen, state media reported.

Internet users favourably contrasted Mr Ji's decision to warn passengers with the behaviour of the petitioner behind the Xiamen attack.

"It's a big step forward ... because Ji chose to inflict the smallest amount of injury,'' one Sina Weibo user wrote.

California wildfire 49% contained, evacuation orders remain

From Christine Theodorou, CNN

updated 12:32 AM EDT, Sun July 21, 2013

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • A wildfire burning near Idyllwild has burned more than 27,200 acres
  • The fire is 49% contained, according to fire officials
  • The blaze continues to threaten homes, with evacuations ordered for Pine Cove

(CNN) -- Firefighters worked Saturday to get the upper hand on a mountain wildfire in Southern California that forced the evacuation of thousands and destroyed a number of homes and vehicles.

The wildfire, burning near Idyllwild and Fern Valley, has burned more than 27,200 acres since it began Monday, fire officials said. The blaze was 49% contained, they said.

With forecasters predicting scattered mountain showers, fire officials hoped to further corral the blaze in the San Jacinto Mountains that has destroyed at least six homes and damaged a handful of others.

"Firefighter safety is a major concern as rain can also bring flooding and create slick and dangerous working conditions," the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Saturday.

At the height of the wildfire, evacuation orders were ordered for more than 6,000 people. More than 4,000 homes south of Palm Springs also were threatened.

Evacuation orders remained in effect Saturday for Idyllwild and Fern Valley. Authorities also announced an evacuation warning of the mountain community of Pine Cove, fire officials said, indicating that that area could be evacuated soon.

Evacuation orders were lifted in three communities -- Trails End, Morris Ranch, and Camp Joe Scherman -- on Saturday.

More than 3,400 fire personnel have been dispatched to battle the mountain fire.

Meanwhile, in southwest Oregon, fire crews were working to put out a 500-acre Pacifica Fire burning near the town of Williams.

More than 200 firefighters were working to put out the fire that has destroyed at least one house and was threatening up to 150 buildings as well as an undetermined number of vehicles, fire officials told CNN affiliate KTVL.

CNN's Jennifer Moore contributed to this report.

Procter & Gamble distribution center to create 1,000 jobs near Shippensburg

Click photo to enlarge

Procter & Gamble will open a new distribution center near Shippensburg, creating nearly 1,000 new jobs.

Procter & Gamble will open a new distribution center near Shippensburg, creating nearly 1,000 new jobs.

The company was identified Thursday as the mystery tenant seeking to build a massive distribution center on Olde Scotland Road, Southampton Township (Franklin County).

Construction is expected to be finished by next summer. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to employ four to six Procter & Gamble employees and 900 to 1,000 contractors.

Procter & Gamble spokesman Jeff LeRoy said a contractor has not been chosen yet, so it is too early to say when hiring will start.

The contractor positions are expected to carry an average salary of $43,500 a year, according to a spokesman for the Department of Community and Economic Development.

"This is a pretty big deal, considering they're talking over 900 jobs. We already have a low unemployment rate compared to the rest of Pennsylvania," said Maria Misner, planning/GIS officer for Southampton Township. "It's definitely going to impact the area."

Misner said grading work has started at the site, but structural work has yet to begin.

Liberty Property Trust owns the 182-acre site near Exit 24 of Interstate 81 and will lease the building to Procter & Gamble.

The project is an investment of $93 million, according to Jeanne Leonard, vice president, corporate communications for Liberty Property Trust.

Conewago Enterprises of Hanover is the general contractor. Leonard said a total of 500 construction jobs are expected to be involved in the project.

The building, which will be LEED certified, would be about 1.7 million square feet - about the size of 31 football fields - and would easily be the largest distribution center in the region. At full employment, it would also be one of the largest employers in Franklin County.

Shippensburg Area School District, Southampton Township and Franklin County approved a property tax incentive for the project in the form of a Local Economic Revitalization

Tax Abatement Act zone.

The state of Pennsylvania is also offering incentives, according to Steve Kratz, spokesman for the Department of Community and Economic Development.

The company was offered a $2 million Pennsylvania First Program grant for capital improvements. A $959,000 job creation tax credit was also offered to the third-party contractor that will be doing the hiring.

"Today's announcement is great news for Pennsylvania and Franklin County. Procter & Gamble's decision to create a new facility in the commonwealth will result in one of the largest job announcements so far in 2013," Gov. Tom Corbett said in a statement. "A warehouse and distribution center of this size is projected to create more than 960 new jobs and various construction positions over the next few years." A Fortune 500 company, Cincinnati-based Proctor & Gamble is the largest consumer packaged goods company in the world.

Some of the best known personal grooming and household care brands are Proctor & Gamble brands - Bounty, Crest, Tide, Duracell, Pampers, and Vicks, to name a few.

The distribution center will serve the mid-Atlantic market. LeRoy said the company chose the Southampton Township location because of the proximity to the interstate and major rail networks.

Nokia reveals why it picked Windows Phone over Android

Nokia is finally offering insight into why it chose to exclusively support Microsoft's unproven Windows Phone platform instead of the more popular Android operating system: Samsung.

"What we were worried about a couple of years ago was the very high risk that one hardware manufacturer could come to dominate Android," said Nokia CEO Stephen Elop to The Guardian.

"We had a suspicion of who it might be, because of the resources available, the vertical integration, and we were respectful of the fact that we were quite late in making that decision."

Samsung has indeed become the go-to manufacturer of Android devices and has even replaced Nokia, now No. 2, as the top phone maker in the world.

Could have been another HTC

Elop noted that there are a lot of quality Android devices on the market right now, which could allude to the HTC One, but Samsung continues to overshadow its Android competitors.

"Examine the Android ecosystem, and there's a lot of good devices from many different companies, but one company has essentially now become the dominant player."

Instead of being another HTC with poor financials, Nokia predicted that it was better off being part of a "third alternative."

"As an operator [AT&T] wants to negotiate with different people and keep pressure on everybody and have the best range of options, [and] wants that third alternative."

"So strategically we have an opening with AT&T and every other operator in the world - because we've taken that path as the third ecosystem."

The road ahead

Elop admitted that it's been difficult, as Nokia's use of the Windows Phone platform makes it a credibility-seeking challenger with phones like the new Nokia Lumia 1020 running Windows Phone 8.

Still he contends that the Finnish company's agreement with Microsoft was the right move.

"It was the right decision," he said. "You look at a number of other Android providers right now and they're in a tough spot."
