Hypertension- Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
_________________________________________________________________
Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the most common ailments all over the world. It is a
condition in which blood pressure in the arteries is chronically increased. Blood pressure (BP) is the
force exerted by circulating blood upon the walls of blood vessels, and is one of the principal vital signs.
With each heart beat, the heart pumps blood through the arteries to the rest of the body. If the
pressure is higher than the normal range, the heart has to work harder to pump, and this could lead to
organ damage and several serious ailments like a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, aneurysm or kidney
failure.
Systolic blood pressure refers to the arterial pressure that is created against the blood vessels when the
heart pumps blood. When the heart is at rest, the pressure is called diastolic blood pressure. For
example, if you check your blood pressure and the reading is 120/80 (considered as normal), then the
value 180 is the systolic blood pressure and the value 80 is the diastolic blood pressure. Blood pressure
of 140/90 is considered hypertension. Blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 or above is
considered pre-hypertension which is used to denote a risk of hypertension.
There are two types of hypertension- essential and secondary hypertension. For the first type, the cause
of high blood pressure is not known and it accounts for 95% of patients. If the cause of high blood
pressure is known to be caused by kidney diseases, tumors or birth control pills, then it is called
secondary hypertension.

factors which predisposes a person to hypertension. These include smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle,
diabetes, lack of physical activity and high levels of salt intake, genetics and a family history of

food supplement or other types of alternative medicine which are found in plenty in health food stores.
Symptoms of hypertension

hypertension do not know they have the disease for many years. In case a person has extremely high
blood pressure, he may show some symptoms like severe headaches, fatigue and confusion, nausea,
dizziness, breathlessness, chest pains, problems with vision, irregular heartbeat or blood in the urine. In

Treatment of hypertension
One of the main aims for treating a person with hypertension is to bring down the blood pressure below
140/90- or even lower if the patient has diabetes or chronic kidney disease. If the patient's high blood
pressure is not reduced, then it could lead to stroke, heart failure or heart attack. Most doctors would
prescribe the patient to take ACE inhibitors, diuretics, calcium channel blockers etc. The patients will
also be advised to change their lifestyles, eat healthy food, reducing sodium and to drink in moderation.
