Working Jelly Bean build available for Verizon, GSM Galaxy Nexus

Android Central

Well, that didn't take very long: our crafty friends over at RootzWiki have already brought the I/O Android 4.1 preview build to both the GSM and Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Forum member B16's original GSM dump, followed by jdkoreclipse's VZW versison, have been tinkered with throughout the night and appear to be working quite well. It's flashable through Recovery after a wipe and a cleared cache, though as always we suggest you backup before playing around. After spending the morning snacking on Jelly Bean I can report that the Verizon build is near perfection, with even LTE working beautifully. As always, bugs are possible, especially since this is merely a preview build. If you've got the guts and the sweettooth, download links can be found at the source.

Let?s face it the average video gamer has the attention span of a gnat. so of you are going to catch their attention when writing a video game review you need to do it quick. In other words, start with a 5-star method at the top. How many stars is it worth?

Next you must explain at the bottom who you rate the video games, and your criteria, because a true gamer is not interested in your opinion unless you quantify things. The next critical point of contention in video game review writing is to explain the level of play; is it for a beginner, intermediate or advanced player.

Of course, the feel of the game, responsiveness and speed of play are also extremely important to the video gamer and its okay to tell it like it is. If the graphics are gay or they suck, then say so. How realistic are the characters and scenery? This is where you can go into detail about the landscape, buildings, attire of characters and how they interact, how real to life is it?

Another significant factor is the point system; is it fair, does it cheat the gamer, and are there ways to boost the point score using various strategies and tricks. If you really want your gaming reviews to get the five stars that you only give the very best video games that you review, then you must give the gamer pointers and tricks to better their scores, and better their chances of winning. Tips and tricks are the most interesting points of any gaming review, so don?t let us down.

Ex-Bosnian Serb leader cleared of one genocide charge

By msnbc.com news services

Judges in The Hague acquitted Radovan Karadzic of one count of genocide on Thursday, but left 10 other war crimes and genocide charges standing against the former Bosnian Serb leader.?

Judges said prosecutors had not presented enough evidence to support the genocide count covering mass killings, expulsions and persecution by Serb forces of Muslims and Croats from Bosnian towns early in the country's 1992-95 war.

However, they rejected defense motions to dismiss 10 other charges that included the 1995 killing of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica, Europe's worst massacre since World War II.?

Karadzic was leader of the Bosnian Serb government during the three-year war that raged in Bosnia from 1992 after the break-up of Yugoslavia.?

He was indicted for war crimes and genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 1995 and brought to The Hague 13 years later. His trial, under way since 2009, continues later this year with the opening of his defense case.?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

US lies low on Egypt, acting behind the scenes. Is that approach wise?

Obama and administration officials have remained relatively quiet, at least in public, as turmoil revived in Egypt and a new president was elected. Tougher communication is likely going on behind the scenes, some analysts say.

By Howard LaFranchi,?Staff writer / June 25, 2012

Egypt?s election of an Islamist from the Muslim Brotherhood in its first free presidential elections is further evidence of the challenges that dramatic change in a crucial country like Egypt present to the United States.

The election of Mohamed Morsi, a US-educated engineer, makes the hard place the Obama administration was already in as a result of Egypt?s revolution that much tighter. The stark dilemmas the US faces may explain why President Obama ? he of Cairo speech, 2009, fame ? and other administration officials have remained relatively quiet on Egypt during recent weeks.

Here are just two examples of the dilemmas the US faces. One, Mr. Morsi?s past offers some worrisome tendencies, including support for antireligious-minority and antiwomen policies, but how can the US express its concerns without sounding critical of Egyptians? democratically expressed preference? Two, how far ought the US go in criticizing the Egyptian military?s power grab prior to the announcement of Morsi?s triumph, when the military there may be the best last guarantor of critical US interests, including preservation of the Egypt-Israel peace accords?

The realities that such vexing dilemmas won't be resolved any time soon, and that any overly emphatic public expression of official US opinion on Egyptian events could easily backfire, explain the administration?s reticence on Egypt, some regional analysts say.

?What the US is engaged in is a complex private effort to protect regional security interests and maintain relations with the military and the intelligence apparatus ? even as the message is delivered and reinforced as events unfold of uncompromising support for democratic change,? says Brian Katulis, a Middle East specialist at the Center for American Progress in Washington. ?It?s a complicated dance,? he adds, ?that will go on for the rest of the year and beyond that.?

Mr. Obama called Morsi Sunday night to congratulate him and express US support for "Egypt's transition to democracy." According to a White House statement on the phone call, Morsi welcomed US support.

An effort to avoid the appearance of heavy-handed interference in Egypt?s internal affairs helps explain the careful, measured ? and noticeably infrequent ? public commentary from American officials. ?They [in the administration] have proceeded as they have at least in part out of a desire to make sure that no one thinks that we think this is about us,? says Mr. Katulis.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton responded to the military?s steps earlier this month to amass for itself a long list of powers by warning that "there can be no going back on the democratic transition called for by the Egyptian people."?

Then last week she said it was ?imperative? that the military turn over power to ?the legitimate winner? of the presidential election, and she described as ?clearly worrying? military actions that threaten to ?subvert constitutional authority.?

News: Clear Channel Adds Cox Media, Emmis Communications to ...

June 26, 2012

via Billboard

Clear Channel?s Internet radio service is getting more local. An agreement announced Tuesday will add to the iHeartRadio platform 86 radio stations from Cox Media Group and another 20 from Emmis Communications. The stations will promote iHeartRadio on-air and both companies will continue to stream the stations? broadcasts on their respective web sites and mobile apps.

The deal puts three of the top 20 Internet radio broadcasters in the same platform. iHeartRadio is the second Internet radio service in the U.S. behind Pandora, according to Triton Digital measurements for April 2012. Cox Media Group?s radio stations ranked #7 and Emmis Communications? stations ranked #14.

iHeartRadio is a hybrid Internet radio platform that offers both personalized radio ? a la Pandora ? and online streams of terrestrial broadcasts. Clear Channel has always considered personalized Internet radio to be a feature rather than a business. The addition of Cox Media Group and Emmis Communications stations underscores its belief that consumers will continue to desire streams of live and local radio stations in an age of infinite choice.

Cox Media Group, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises, has 67 FM stations and 13 AM stations in Houston, Atlanta, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa-St. Petersburg, San Antonio, Jacksonville and many other markets. Emmis Communications has multiple radio stations in Austin, St. Louis and Indianapolis as well as hip-hop powerhouses Hot 97 in New York and Power 106 in Los Angeles.

Training Employees on Effective Social Media Use | Posse Social ...

social media trainingProperly training employees on effective social media use for companies is one of those important factors that can help a business grow socially. Employees are internet savvy and understand the use of social networks in the majority of cases. There are some companies that want to ban employees from using the internet, but the truth is that they will find a way and the time to be online. Whether they are using it at work, at home or on a mobile device makes no difference when it comes to the need for training. It isn?t difficult to instruct your employees on the acceptable use of social networking sites as it relates to your company, but it is something that must be done.

One of the first steps that any business using social media marketing must take is to decide whether its goal is to increase brand name awareness, improve customer relations, or increase business. No matter which you choose, you must have your social media policy in place. Not only do you need to have the policy in place, but you should be sure that it covers all the aspects of employee interactions on social networking sites. That doesn?t mean that their rights can be violated. It does mean working within the law to build the best policy possible.

The next step in training employees on effective social media use for the company should involve setting up an intranet on which they can learn and interact together. The intranet site should be equipped to allow interactions with different social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Training should also include the appropriate method of dealing with grievances or issues other than airing them online along with step by step actions they should take. It should also include internet etiquette and an explanation as to why the company uses external social media platforms.

The majority of employees will understand the benefits for the company as well as for themselves where it concerns the use of social media platforms. Having a plan in place to deal with the unforeseen will make taking care of problems much easier. Companies are more focused on team work today than in the past where they felt that had to control employees. Having everyone work as a team player can only help to grow the company.

Training employees on effective social media use can have an astounding effect on the company?s marketing plan and thus business growth. By having the right tools in place and instructing employees on policies and use of social media the returns will be much greater. It is better to see what is happening than to wake up and get broadsided by a disgruntled employee. By giving employees a place that they can network and keep in touch employers increase the feeling that they value their employees. This goes a long way in growing a business.

(AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

(AP) ? A divided Supreme Court threw out major parts of Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants Monday in a ruling sure to reverberate through the November elections. The justices unanimously approved the law's most-discussed provision ? requiring police to check the immigration status of those they stop for other reasons ? but limited the consequences.

Although upholding the "show me your papers" requirement, which some critics say could lead to ethnic profiling, the justices struck down provisions that created state crimes allowing local police to arrest people for federal immigration violations. And they warned against detaining people for any prolonged period merely for not having proper immigration papers.

The mixed outcome vindicated the Obama administration's aggressive challenge to laws passed by Arizona and the five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? that followed its lead in attempting to deal with illegal immigration in the face of federal inaction on comprehensive reform.

The administration had assailed the Arizona law as an unconstitutional intrusion into an area under federal control.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, joined in his majority opinion by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts as well as three liberal justices, said the impasse in Washington over immigration reform did not justify state intrusion.

"Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the state may not pursue policies that undermine federal law," Kennedy said. That part of the ruling drew a caustic dissent from Justice Antonin Scalia, who said the Obama administration doesn't want to enforce existing immigration law.

A second opinion with potentially important implications for the presidential campaign is expected when the court meets Thursday to issue its final rulings this term. The court's verdict on Obama's landmark health care overhaul probably will come that day.

In other action Monday, the court:

? Ruled unconstitutional by a 5-4 vote state laws that require judges to impose sentences of life in prison with no possibility of parole on convicted murderers younger than 18.

? Struck down, also 5-4, a Montana law limiting corporate campaign spending, declining to revisit the two-year-old ruling in the Citizens United case.

The Arizona decision landed in the middle of a presidential campaign in which President Barack Obama has been heavily courting Latino voters and Republican challenger Mitt Romney has been struggling to win Latino support. During a drawn-out primary campaign, Romney and the other GOP candidates mostly embraced a hard line on the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, though Romney has lately taken a softer tone.

Obama said he was pleased that the court struck down key parts of Arizona's law but was concerned about what the high court left intact.

"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," the president said in a written statement. He said police in Arizona should not enforce the provision in a way that undermines civil rights.

"What this decision makes unmistakably clear is that Congress must act on comprehensive immigration reform," Obama said.

Romney did not immediately comment on the substance of the court decision Monday, but he said, "I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities."

In his majority opinion, Kennedy distinguished the "show me your papers" provision from the other challenged parts of the law by pointing out that consultation between local and federal authorities already is an important part of the immigration system. Local and state police called on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's support center more than 1 million times in 2009 alone, he said.

Kennedy said the law could ? and suggested it should ? be read to avoid concerns that status checks could lead to prolonged detention. "Detaining individuals solely to verify their immigration status would raise constitutional concerns," he said, but he did not define what would constitute too long a detention.

A divided court struck down these three major provisions:

? Requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers.

? Making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job.

? Allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

The vote was 6-2 against making it a state crime not to carry immigration papers and 5-3 against the other two provisions.

Justice Elena Kagan sat out the case because of her previous work in the Obama administration.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said the ruling marked a victory for people who believe in the responsibility of states to defend their residents. The case, she said, "has always been about our support for the rule of law. That means every law, including those against both illegal immigration and racial profiling. Law enforcement will be held accountable should this statute be misused in a fashion that violates an individual's civil rights."

Civil rights groups that separately challenged the law over concerns that it would lead to rights abuses said their lawsuit would go on.

Even with the limitations the high court put on Arizona, the immigration status check still is "an invitation to racial profiling," said American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Omar Jadwat.

Carlos Beltran, looking for day labor work Monday in the Phoenix area, said he was glad to hear the court struck down most of the law.

"We can still be here today, find a job and go home and tell our wives we have something to eat tonight," said Beltran, who was born in the U.S. but whose parents are illegal immigrants.

With the ruling, however, Beltran said the potential for racial profiling will become worse. "I don't want to have my dad afraid of looking for a job. He has four kids. They shouldn't be afraid of trying to make a living," he said.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.

The other states adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also were on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor joined all of Kennedy's opinion.

Scalia and Justice Clarence Thomas would have allowed all the challenged provisions to take effect. Justice Samuel Alito would have allowed police to arrest immigrants without papers who seek work, and also to make arrests without warrants.

Scalia, in an unusual move, pointed to facts not in the record before the court when he described Obama's recently announced plans to ease deportation rules for some children of illegal immigrants.

"The president said at a news conference that the new program is 'the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the administration's proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind," Scalia said.

The case is Arizona v. U.S., 11-182.

'There's an App for that' to Shop for Real Estate, Too ...

Posted by: iowahomeloans on: June 25, 2012

As electronic devices like smart phones and tablets have become more popular, more and more people are using them in all aspects of their every day lives. If you?re in the market for a home, there?s an app for that, too! Several of the ?big? real estate websites offer smart phone and tablet apps, which can help you browse homes, get more information about homes or even get an idea of a home?s value and taxes. But keep in mind that anything you read on one of these apps may be inaccurate, so take time to?talk with a local, professional and knowledgeable real estate agent or the even home seller for the most up-to-date info.

?

Zillow for Your Phones and Tablets

Zillow has become one of the most popular real estate websites, and they?ve done a great job of supporting their popularity by designing applications for the most popular smart phones and tablets. Zillow syndicates real estate listings and pulls data from a variety of sources to help buyers get a complete picture of the home they?re considering. Use Zillow to browse homes on the go, check out homes in a specific area or get more details on the homes you?re considering.

?

Realtor.com Real Estate Apps

Realtor.com is reputed to be one of the most reliable sources of real estate info by the actual professionals in the business ? real estate agents. Realtor.com?s apps support fewer platforms, but the big ones, such as iPhone, iPad, Android and WIndows Phone 7 are all supported. The nice thing about Realtor.com is that it pulls from MLS, which means the data you?re getting is likely more up-to-date than the other third party apps. But you may find fewer properties, and you don?t always?get the additional info about the homes?that the third parties often provide.

?

Trulia.com App for Electronic Devices

Trulia is another third-party site, comparable to Zillow, where home buyers can research their new homes. Like Zillow, Trulia syndicates real estate listings from other sources, and pulls in additional data to give buyers extra info about a property. Some real estate agents have expressed some serious concerns?about Trulia, though, because the data may be incomplete, and can give buyers an incorrect idea of a property?s value or costs associated with the property. It supports platforms comparable to Zillow, and can be a great supplement to Realtor.com?s app.

In the end, the apps are great for a starting point to get a baseline of information you need to start a decision process on your new home.? However, also visiting with a licensed, local, professional real estate salesperson will allow you a chance to glean off of their expertise in the area you are considering.? The most important financial decision you might possibly ever make in your lifetime??>? will you trust just an app to get it done for you???

Restaurant Review - Taconic on Bedford - Anika on Wine, Food and ...

I admit it, I was not looking forward to Taconic on Bedford. I mean really, in our precious world of hipster Brooklyn dining, this place is the very hippest, the most precious of all. But you know what - Taconic on Bedford pulls it off, and I highly recommend that you try it.

Taconic, as the locals call it, is named after New York State Route 987G, the Taconic State Parkway. Owners Abraham and Fenton Percival moved from 1870's Wyoming to Williamsburg in early 2010. Fenton worked for a while as Bee-Keeper at Egg Restaurant, and Abraham was Director of Body Art at Cafe Grumpy. One spring weekend in 2011, the brothers attended the chemical-free soap and candle making conference and expo in the town of Ghent, NY. They fell in love with the Hudson Valley and decided to bring the rustic vibe and food back to Williamsburg. And so, we have Taconic on Bedford.

The Percivals found a wonderful spot for their restaurant. Set just off the street on a lovely corner of Bedford Avenue, the place feels like it is of the woods.

And the view from the main dining room is utterly gorgeous, emphasizing the bucolic beauty that can still be found in the part of Williamsburg near Newtown Creek.

There are a few problems with Taconic on Bedford, and I'm going to get those out of the way first. Taconic does not take reservations. If you or someone in your party can present a valid hunting or fishing license you will get priority for a table. Otherwise, go for a stroll in Williamsburg and Fenton will send a telegram when your table is ready. Secondly, it can take a long time to be noticed by the staff at Taconic, even after being seated. I felt so grateful to be there, though, that I didn't mind the fact that 45 minutes went by before someone came to take a drink order. That said, the servers, most of whom are former rodeo clowns, are not entirely adverse to being interrupted as they socialize, and will take your order if you are a little pushy about it.

These are minor problems, though, and there is a lot to love at Taconic on Bedford. All of the wood that went into building Taconic was reclaimed from Home Depot, and the place looks great.

Taconic offers a convenient and enviro-friendly valet service, and your car will be parked in a bed of local dried leaves while you dine.

And the wait for food is made more palatable as you sip mixologist Lleyton Pembrickson III 's signature hand-made cocktails. Lleyton came to Taconic from Dow Chemicals and she has since created many delicious libations for the Taconic crowd. My current favorite is the Irish Spring, a captivating blend of Tullamore Dew, rendered duck fat, house-made quinoa syrup, and hand-shaved green soap.

Wine is served in deerskin pouches, and there is an innovative hydration program, offering diners a variety of hand-poured waters. I usually go with the over-sized watering can, and the water is fresh and cold, very impressive indeed. You can enjoy it plain or with house-pickled ice cubes - I find both to be very satisfying.

And how about the food at Taconic? I cannot profess to have tried everything, but what I've had is excellent. Most of the vegetables and grains served at Taconic are locally foraged, and in a truly innovative touch, foraging is outsourced to a small team of Siberian Husky pups. The above photo shows Amaranth, the current leader of the pack.

Taconic adheres to strict nose-to-tail vegetable practices, and every part of the plant is used. Pictured above is the Cabbage, Celery, and Carrot ($17), a delicious melange of the whole vegetables, sliced and served with a light and tangy "mayo-vinegar jus."

Moss salad ($23) is served on the rock it grew on, and is woodsy and redolent of chlorophyll. It is pleasantly textured, but I felt that a dressing of some sort might have improved the dish.

There are a variety of meat dishes made from locally sourced animals, but if you order these dishes you must be willing to actually butcher the meat before the kitchen staff will prepare it. I was initially put off by this, as I don't know how to butcher, but in the end its a nice opportunity to learn. The butchering station is next to the bar and the first-aid area so diners can watch and learn from each others' mistakes.

After one lunchtime visit Abraham Percival took me into his office so we could chat. He is a lovely guy, his brother too. I asked about future plans and he said that the Percivals just opened a general store next to Taconic.

He gave me a quick tour and so far it seems to hold a wide array of soda. Abraham said that there will soon be a variety of very expensive pickles and candles, and also Hellman's mayonnaise.

Tropical Storm Debby turns sights on Fla., Ala.

A state of emergency has been declared in Louisiana in preparation for Tropical Storm Debby and oil rigs across the Gulf have been evacuated. The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel reports.

By NBC News and news services

Updated at 10:13 p.m. ET: Parts of Florida and Alabama were under a tropical storm warning Sunday as Debby churned off the Gulf Coast, leaving wary residents to closely watch a storm whose path has so far been difficult to forecast.

Underscoring the storm's unpredictable nature, forecasters discontinued a tropical storm warning for Louisiana after forecast models indicated Debby was less likely to make a westward turn than initially predicted. Coastal Alabama and parts of Florida, including the Panhandle, remained under tropical storm warnings.

Debby already had dumped heavy rain on parts of Florida and spawned some isolated tornadoes, causing some damage to homes and knocking down power lines. High winds forced the closure of an interstate bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southeast.

The first named storm of 2012 to enter the Gulf of Mexico, was centered about 115 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida and was nearly stationary, the National Hurricane Center said in its 7 p.m. CDT update.

Debby, no longer expected to gain hurricane strength, packed winds of 60 mph, the Miami-based center said.

Citing a "significant change in the forecast track," the NHC said Debby is expected to hit the Florida Panhandle near Panama City on Thursday as a tropical storm. "This forecast remains uncertain due to weak steering currents," the NHC said.

The NHC had previously predicted that the storm would track westward toward the Louisiana coast as a weak hurricane, spurring Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to declare a state of emergency.

Chris Landsea, a meteorologist at the National Hurricane Center, said forecasters rely on computer models which were contradictory until Sunday.

"They came into a bit more of an agreement that the westward turn is less likely," he said.

Landsea said every storm is different and has different characteristics, "and in this case it's a very unpredictable storm." He said Debby was could become a hurricane.

A major concern will be flooding from heavy rainfall. Parts of Florida and southeast Georgia could receive 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some areas getting as much as 20, he said.

This Sunday handout image provided by NASA shows a satellite view of Tropical Storm Debby as it nears the northern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.

Debby's top sustained winds were at about 60 mph (95 kph). The storm was moving toward the northeast at 3 mph (6 kph).

Near the mouth of the Mississippi southeast of New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said officials were making preparations to protect the main highway from tidal flooding.

At least one tornado linked to the storm touched down Saturday in southwest Florida, but no injuries were reported. Another was reported Sunday in Venice, damaging some homes.

"This is quite common with this type of storm," senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart with the National Hurricane Center said of the twisters. "They tend to not be very large or long-lived, which can be difficult to detect on radar. So people need to keep an eye on the sky."

Debby has shut nearly a quarter of offshore crude oil and natural gas production, the U.S. government said.

BP Plc, the largest oil producer in the Gulf of Mexico, shut in all of its production. The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port, the only U.S. port for handling the largest oil tank ships, stopped operating due to rough seas.

ConocoPhillips and Royal Dutch Shell Plc had also shut some of their production as of Sunday as the first storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season to threaten offshore production gained strength in the Gulf.

The storm has a 30 percent chance of reaching hurricane strength before landfall and could temporarily disrupt 55 percent of Gulf offshore oil production and 44 percent of natural gas production due to short-term evacuations, according to Weather Insight, a unit of Thomson Reuters.

Despite storm warnings in the Panhandle, Debby hadn't totally dampened vacations.

Thousands were on the beach at Pensacola Beach, Fla., on Sunday morning. Many used their phones to take photos of huge waves crashing into the concrete supports of a fishing pier. There wasn't any rain yet; just gusty winds and dark, fast-moving clouds.

Few people were in the water. Red flags warned tourists to stay out of the surf, and lifeguards cruised the sand on all-terrain vehicles, blowing whistles at anyone who got near the waves.

Workers with rental companies used pickup trucks to gather chairs and umbrellas as a precaution against an unusually high tide.

(AP) ? Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson is in a familiar spot at the Travelers Championship.

For the second straight year, Jacobson had a 9-under 131 total for 36 holes, following his opening 65 with a 66 on Friday. And for the second consecutive year, bad weather pushed back the completion of the second round to Saturday.

The Swede wouldn't mind if history kept repeating itself.

He's trying to join Phil Mickelson, the 2001 and 2002 winner, as the only players to successfully defend a title at River Highlands.

"Any tournament is tough to win," Jacobson said. "To win two in a row is probably tougher. But you know, you have the thing going for you that you have some good memories to draw from, so hopefully that allows a little bit to increase your chances."

Charley Hoffman opened with a par and birdied the next five holes to move within a stroke of the lead before rain suspended play for the day. Nathan Green also was 8 under when the horn blew at 3:19 p.m. He finished nine holes.

"It was a nice five-hole run," Hoffman said. "Obviously, I wish I probably could have kept it going a little longer, but obviously in a good frame of mind heading into tomorrow."

It was the second weather delay of the day. The first lasted 70 minutes.

Jacobson played before the rain hit the course. He started on the back nine and followed up two birdies with an eagle on the 13th hole. He hit his second shot 240 yards over the water and onto the green, and made a 40-foot putt on the par 5.

"It's going to be tough to drive it the way I did the last two rounds last year, where I didn't miss the fairway," Jacobson said. "So, I'm not going to chase that. But yeah, probably I have been playing about the same as I did the first couple days of last year."

Blake Adams had a 64, the best round of the day, to join Stuart Appleby and Roland Thatcher at 7 under. Appleby had a 65, and Thatcher shot a 67.

Adams had five birdies on the back nine.

"I think I finally woke up," said Adams, who bogeyed the final two in the first round for a 69. "I was just kind of making some silly bogeys all day yesterday and early this morning, and I finally got rid of those silly errors and made some birdies."

Appleby, who has played 13 tournaments and missed eight cuts this season, had seven birdies in shooting his best round of the year.

"I'm thinking better, I'm getting better," Appleby said. "I wasn't hitting it any good and I wasn't thinking any good and I was just really finding it hard."

First-round leader David Mathis fell back to 3 under with a 73 that included a double bogey at 16, where he need three putts on the par 3 hole, and a bogey on 17.

Vijay Singh had one of the tougher finishes Friday. He was looking at a 40-foot birdie putt on 18 to finish at 3 under. But he hit that past the hole and then missed a 2 1/2-foot putt for par. He was 1 under, just above the projected cut line.

The threesome of U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, Masters champ Bubba Watson and reigning PGA champion Keegan Bradley were a combined 2-under par Friday, after shooting a combined 10 under in the first round. Simpson was 5 under overall after a 69, Bradley 4 under after his second straight 68, and Watson 3 under after a 71.

"Keegan played pretty good, but Bubba and I didn't play that well, so we weren't joking as much," Simpson said. "I'm glad those guys made the cut and hopefully we can all play well tomorrow."

The second round was set to resume at 7 a.m. Saturday, followed by the third round with players playing in threesomes off both the first and 10th tees.

"This place drains great, it's an old gravel pit," said Mark Russell, the PGA Tour's vice president in charge of rules. "We've got a good forecast for tomorrow, so we'll be in business."

New 'doubly magic' atom of tin created

Tin, a material whose name is sometimes synonymous with "dull," has a secret side that's extraordinary, physicists say.

Scientists have succeeded in creating a new type of tin atom with "magic" properties and in studying it in more detail than ever before.

The nuclei of normal tin atoms are made of 50 protons and 62 neutrons, creating a stable substance called tin-112 (or 112Sn, which is the chemical symbol for tin).

However, scientists can make a special version of tin with exactly 50 protons and 50 neutrons, creating a "doubly magic" atom with equal numbers of its nucleus' ingredients. In the new study, physicists created this tin-100 and analyzed its decay to reveal some of its spectacular properties. The researchers, led by Christoph Hinke of Germany's Technische Universit?t M?nchen, reported their findings in the June 21 issue of the journal Nature. [Tiny Grandeur: Stunning Photos of the Very Small]

"They have achieved a significant leap forward in the study of the heaviest 'symmetrical doubly magic' nucleus," Michigan State University's Daniel Bazin, who wasn't involved in the new study, wrote in an accompanying essay in Nature. "Composed of 50 protons and 50 neutrons, this nucleus is drawing the attention of nuclear physicists around the globe because of its unique location in the nuclear landscape."

The nuclei of atoms have shells in which protons and neutrons can be arranged, similar to the shells of electrons that orbit the nucleus. The first nuclear shell fits two protons, or two neutrons, while the next shell fits six, and so on. When a nucleus has enough protons or neutrons to fill a shell, it is especially stable, and scientists call these numbers "magic."

Thus, two protons is a magic number, as is eight, because with eight a nucleus can fill both its first and second proton shells of two and six, respectively.

"Nuclei that have a magic number of neutrons or protons are more tightly bound than their non-magic counterparts, and their intrinsic simplicity makes them prime candidates for testing proposed models of nuclear structure," Bazin wrote. "Particularly interesting are nuclei in which the number of both protons and neutrons reaches one of the magic numbers. These doubly magic nuclei have even greater binding energy than singly magic nuclei."

While tin-100 has magic numbers of protons and neutrons, it also is very close to being unstable ? it has 12 neutrons fewer than the lightest stable isotope of tin, tin-112, Bazin points out.

"Therein lies the particular attraction of 100Sn: It is at the same time doubly magic and at the edge of the nuclear landscape," he wrote. "Unfortunately, what makes this nucleus attractive is also what makes it difficult to study. It is so far away from stable isotopes that it is extremely difficult to produce."

To make their tin-100, Hinke and his colleagues used xenon-124 nuclei, which have 54 protons and 70 neutrons. They smashed these into a sheet of beryllium, causing some protons and neutrons to be sheared off the xenon, leaving behind nuclei with 50 protons and neutrons each, also known as tin nuclei.

The process is imprecise, and the magic tin is created only a small percentage of time. The researchers sent out 1.2 ? 1015 xenon nuclei (that's 12 followed by 14 zeroes!), and created a total of only 259 nuclei of tin-100. However, previous experiments were able to produce only a few of these nuclei, so the new project represents a significant improvement.

The results were enough for the researchers to study the special tin and measure its half life to greater precision than ever before. The scientists also found that when tin-100 decays, it has particularly striking properties that could reveal more about the nature of nuclear forces. (Half life is the amount of time it takes for half of the atoms in a substance to decay.)

The experiment was conducted at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany.

"As always happens with scientists, once they have been given a taste of a new delicacy, they crave more," Bazin wrote. "Other laboratories have joined the race and are working to improve on the GSI 100Sn production rates."

Among these are the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory in Wako, Japan, the SPIRAL2 project at the heavy-ion accelerator GANIL in France, and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams at Michigan State University.
