Winning numbers drawn for $320 million Powerball jackpot

The drawing for the Powerball jackpot, now at 320 million takes place Saturday. The jackpot is the sixth highest ever. People in 42 states and Washington, D.C., were scrambling for tickets, even with odds at about 175 million to one. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

A winning ticket for Saturday night's $338 million Powerball jackpot was sold in New Jersey, lottery officials said early Sunday.

The winning numbers in the drawing were: 17, 29, 31, 52, 53, 31. The drawing took place Saturday.

Before the drawing, the jackpot had been estimated at $320 million, but late ticket sales pushed that to $338 million -- the fourth-largest Powerball prize ever. The lump-sum option is $211 million.

The Multi-State Lottery Association said a grand prize-winning ticket was sold in New Jersey.?

People in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands scrambled for Powerball tickets until the last minute, even with odds at about 175 million to one.


No ticket had matched the six numbers in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, and no one had won the jackpot since early February.

Bob King in Boston told NBC affiliate WHDH his daughter is getting married next month and winning the lottery could help.

?I don?t hold out hope of winning, but you can?t win unless you play, right?? King told WHDH.

?Well there's a lot of states in it, so it's a one in a million shot, but everybody has a chance,? Frank Weber of Chicopee, Mass., told NBC affiliate WWLP.

Roanna Fightei from Hardin, Mont., said she would use the winnings to help others.

"Something positive to help -- I would most definitely use more than I needed to help others," she told NBC affiliate KULR. "It's just better to love one another, and to help everybody out there. I believe it comes back at you."

CHICAGO, IL Outcomes after surgery have always been difficult to determine. Now a new case study on more than 500 hip procedures highlights that complication rates may be even higher than previous reports, say researchers presenting at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in Chicago, IL.

"The overall complication rate after hip arthroscopy was 7.2 percent, which is higher than what has been previously reported in the literature at 1.5 percent," said lead author Christopher Larson, MD of the Minnesota Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Institute in Minneapolis. "Our multicenter study trial is one of the first to evaluate complication rates for all arthroscopic hip procedures using a grading scheme that evaluated the possibility of complications based on demographic and surgical data. Previous reports on complications were prior to new surgical techniques such as labral repair and treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or were not comprehensive."

Between January 2011 and April 2012, Larson and his team, evaluated 573 individuals (287 males, 286 females) with a mean age of 32.3 years who underwent hip arthroscopy (minimally invasive surgical procedure in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage of the interior of a joint is performed using an arthroscope) at three institutions. The diagnosis, demographic information and procedures were recorded, and a validated complications grading classification was used for all patients prospectively.

"The most common adverse event after surgery (22.7% of hips) was post-operative sensory disturbance in the leg and only persisted beyond six months in four hips and was considered a sequelae rather than a complication. There was no difference in complications between males vs. females, primary vs. revision, labral repair vs. debridement and BMI," said Larson. "We hope that our research helps to provide new insights into surgery complications and how to prevent them."

A baby limosa harlequin frog, the target of a big conservation effort, sits atop a U.S. quarter.

Several teeny-tiny frogs, one big hop for amphibian conservation.

Scientists have successfully bred a certain type of endangered Panamanian amphibian ? the limosa harlequin frog ? for the first time. ?The development is key because populations of the itty-bitty frog, which is smaller than a quarter as a baby, are declining in its native country.

"This new generation is hugely inspiring to us as we work to conserve and care for this species and others," said Brian Gratwicke, international coordinator for the project and a research biologist at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, one of six partners in the effort.

To get the small amphibians to mate, researchers went to great lengths. They built a rock platform to mimic the underground caves in which the frogs breed, and piped in oxygen-rich water between 72 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (22 and 24 degrees Celsius), according to a release from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute.

Young frogs only feed on algal mats coating rocks. So scientists with the Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project, which bred the frogs, also painted the rock platforms with spirulina algae and then let it dry. When placed inside the enclosure, the algae grew ?and fed the animals.

Young frogs can fit easily on a U.S. quarter with room to spare, and adults don't get much bigger, growing to slightly larger than an inch in length.

For all their trouble, the scientists were rewarded with hundreds of tadpoles from one pair of frogs, and nine youngsters from another, the release noted. These frogs are of the "chevron-patterned" variety; there are also plain-colored forms of limosa harlequin frogs that scientists are trying to breed.

The frog is threatened by habitat loss, development, water pollution and climate change, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Amphibians are also threatened by chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease that kills the animals; due in part to the disease, up to one-third of amphibian species are threatened worldwide.

The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project has successfully bred other challenging endangered species, including crowned treefrogs, horned marsupial frogs and toad mountain harlequin frogs, the release noted.

The frogs will eventually be released into the wild, where the scientists hope they will help replenish the animal's dwindling numbers.

Spatial memory: Mapping blank spots in the cheeseboard maze

Mar. 21, 2013 ? IST Austria Professor Jozsef Csicsvari together with collaborators has succeeded in uncovering processes in which the formation of spatial memory is manifested in a map representation.

During learning, novel information is transformed into memory through the processing and encoding of information in neural circuits. In a recent publication in Neuron, IST Austria Professor Jozsef Csicsvari, together with his collaborator David Dupret at the University of Oxford, and Joseph O'Neill, postdoc in Csicsvari's group, uncovered a novel role for inhibitory interneurons in the rat hippocampus during the formation of spatial memory.

During spatial learning, space is represented in the hippocampus through plastic changes in the connections between neurons. Jozsef Csicsvari and his collaborators investigate spatial learning in rats using the cheeseboard maze apparatus. This apparatus contains many holes, some of which are selected to hide food in order to test spatial memory. During learning trials, animals learn where the rewards are located, and after a period sleep, the researchers test whether the animal can recall these reward locations. In previous work, they and others have shown that memory of space is encoded in the hippocampus through changes in the firing of excitatory pyramidal cells, the so-called "place cells."

A place cell fires when the animal arrives at a particular location. Normally, place cells always fire at the same place in an environment; however, during spatial learning the place of their firing can change to encode where the reward is found, forming memory maps.

In their new publication, the researchers investigated the timescale of map formation, showing that during spatial learning, pyramidal neuron maps representing previous and new reward locations "flicker," with both firing patterns occurring. At first, old maps and new maps fluctuate, as the animal is unsure whether the location change is transient or long-lasting. At a later stage, the new map and so the relevant new information dominates.

The scientists also investigated the contribution of inhibitory interneuron circuits to learning. They show that these interneurons, which are extensively interconnected with pyramidal cells, change their firing rates during map formation and flickering: some interneurons fire more often when the new pyramidal map fires, while others fire less often with the new map. These changes in interneuron firing were only observed during learning, not during sleep or recall. The scientists also show that the changes in firing rate are due to map-specific changes in the connections between pyramidal cells and interneurons. When a pyramidal cell is part of a new map, the strengthening of a connection with an interneuron causes an increase in the firing of this interneuron. Conversely, when a pyramidal cell is not part of a new map, the weakening of the connection with the interneuron causes a decrease in interneuron firing rate. Both, the increase and the decrease in firing rate can be beneficial for learning, allowing the regulation of plasticity between pyramidal cells and controlling the timing in their firing.

The new research therefore shows that not only excitatory neurons modify their behaviour and exhibit plastic connection changes during learning, but also the inhibitory interneuron circuits. The researchers suggest that inhibitory interneurons could be involved in map selection -- helping one map dominate and take over during learning, so that the relevant information is encoded.

Barnes & Noble giving away poor-selling Simple Touch e-readers

(Reuters) - Barnes & Noble Inc said on Friday it would give away a free Nook Simple Touch e-reader to any customer who buys its high-definition Nook HD+ tablet next week, a sign it may still be grappling with excess inventory of the unpopular e-reader.

The top U.S. bookstore chain last month reported poor holiday quarter results for its Nook business. Overall revenue fell 26 percent as it sold fewer devices, losing ground to products like Apple Inc's iPad and Amazon.com Inc's Kindle, and the Nook business' loss doubled.

The offer is available from March 24 to March 30.

The Simple Touch e-reader, while well reviewed, failed to catch on with customers since its launch in 2011, as digital bookbuyers have migrated toward tablets, which now offer better reading functions. Returns of unsold Simple Touch devices have repeatedly pinched Barnes & Noble's results.

Last year, Barnes & Noble carved out Nook and its college bookstore business into a new unit called Nook Media. That has attracted investments from Microsoft Corp and Pearson LLC, but Barnes & Noble still owns 78 percent.

Barnes & Noble shares fell 2 percent to $16.54 in mid-afternoon trading.

Bears tight end Evan Rodriguez didn?t want the attention that came with police questioning after an accident involving a car he was the passenger in, but probably cost himself a trip to jail because he lacked that internal timer that tells a person when it?s best to shut up.

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times obtained a copy of the police report from Rodriguez?s arrest in Miami Beach last night on charges of resisting without violence and disorderly intoxication.

According to the report, Rodriguez balked when an officer asked for his identification, saying ?For what? I don?t need this,? and then ?I?m an NFL player. I don?t need all the media stuff.?

When the officer told him the information was going into the passenger section of the traffic accident report, he gave the information but appeared upset. He then walked away, but returned when another officer was giving the driver of the car he was in a roadside sobriety test. He then walked into the middle of the road, was told to go back to the sidewalk, but returned. Asked again to go to the sidewalk, he replied: ?I?m hardheaded like that and I don?t have to listen.?

Told again to go the sidewalk, he replied: ?I don?t need this. I?m an NFL player.?

After continuing to pester the cops, a crowd gathered, and police reported Rodriguez ?slurred speech, blood shot watery eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath.?

Every indication in the report is that Rodriguez would have been ignored as nothing more than a passenger if he had been polite and minded his own business.

Now if you?ll excuse me, my phone?s ringing. It?s the wife.
