At Chavez's birthplace, Maduro vows to win Venezuela vote

SABANETA, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan acting President Nicolas Maduro made a pilgrimage to late socialist leader Hugo Chavez's birthplace on Tuesday and pledged to win the April 14 election in his honor.

"We regard Chavez as our father. He marked our life, that's why we came here to make an oath in the land of his birth that we will never let him down," Maduro, 50, said in the village of Sabaneta where his former boss was born.

"I am going to be president of this country because he ordered it," Maduro added at the launch of his formal election campaign before the oil-producing South American nation's presidential poll.

Opinion polls give Maduro, a former bus driver who rose to be Chavez's foreign minister and vice president, a formidable lead of between 11 and 20 percentage points over opposition challenger Henrique Capriles.

Tuesday marked the start of a lightning 10-day campaign period, although both candidates already had started trying to court voters. The ballot will be the country's first without Chavez after more than a dozen during his 14-year rule.

The burly and mustachioed Maduro is benefiting from the personal blessing of Chavez, who named him as his preferred heir three months before dying of cancer on March 5.

That endorsement, in Chavez's last public speech, stopped in-fighting over the succession within the ruling Socialist Party and transformed Maduro's status in the eyes of his mentor's passionate supporters.

"He is the only candidate who guarantees national independence and can achieve the historic objectives that were set by our commander," said Cynthiq Nouel, a 29-year-old resident of Sabaneta.

Maduro also has a well-financed state apparatus behind him, working-class credentials that play well with loyal 'Chavista' supporters, and the goodwill of millions who have benefited from Chavez's oil-funded social welfare projects, or "missions." Venezuela has the world's largest oil reserves.

Capriles, 40, is a centrist state governor who wants to roll back the economic nationalizations and political polarization of the Chavez era in favor of a Brazilian-style model of free markets with strong welfare spending.

He was launching his campaign in the oil-producing eastern state of Monagas on Tuesday. Opposition strategists are hoping the "sympathy" effect over Chavez's death will wear off, giving Capriles a fighting chance if he focuses voters' attention on their myriad daily problems, from potholes to power cuts.

'I'M THE SOLUTION'

Capriles vows to keep Chavez's "missions," though he plans to staff them with Venezuelans instead of the more than 40,000 Cuban workers who poured into the country under Chavez.

"I'm not the opposition. I'm the solution to Venezuela's problems!" he told a large rally in the eastern city of Maturin, wearing the burgundy shirt of the country's beloved soccer team. "But I can't do it alone. I need each one of you to help me!"

Capriles is promising to raise the minimum salary by 40 percent to counter the impact of a recent devaluation, diversify the economy away from oil, and combat crime levels that ballooned during Chavez's rule.

He lampoons Maduro as an incompetent official trying pathetically to imitate Chavez.

"This is a battle against those who use you, who use our people just to get power," Capriles told the crowd in Maturin.

Maduro's visit to Sabaneta on Tuesday was a recreation of Chavez's successful presidential re-election bid last year, when he began a series of rallies in the village.

Accompanied by family members and political leaders, Maduro and others told stories about Chavez - recalling, for example, how he used to sell sweets on the local streets.

Shaded by mango trees in the garden of the humble home where Chavez was raised by his grandmother, musicians played his favorite "llanera" songs from the Venezuelan plains that inspired much of his rhetoric and ideas.

"Nicolas Maduro will be elected on April 14 by the majority of our people to continue accelerating the revolution," said Chavez's elder brother, Adan, alongside Maduro.

They admired a tree planted by Chavez that is named "Revolution," and another named "Rebellion" that was planted by Bolivian President Evo Morales on a previous visit to the house by the two Latin American leftist leaders and friends.

Though Maduro looks on course to win the vote, he faces a tough task beyond April 14 putting state finances back in order after blowout election-year spending in 2012 and balancing a disparate coalition that for years was kept in line by Chavez's strong personality.

So far, the campaign has been characterized by personal attacks and claims of dirty tricks by both sides. Local media coverage has illustrated the deep political differences.

Press freedom group Reporters Without Borders said journalists had to act responsibly and the authorities must apply the laws impartially. "It is time to leave behind the polarization, with constant insults and vilification, that has dominated the media landscape for so long," it said.

Updated April 2, 3:35 p.m. ET: Shain Gandee, a star on MTV's "Buckwild" reality show, and two others in a truck he was riding in died of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Kanawha County (W.Va.) Sheriff?s Office told TODAY.com on Tuesday.

Gandee, 21, his uncle David Gandee, 48, and friend Donald Myers, 27, were found in a 1984 Ford Bronco that was?partially submerged in deep mud with the exhaust pipe completely covered, according to a report from NBC affiliate WSAZ. Shain Gandee was in the driver's seat, according to a sheriff's press release.

The group had been reported missing on Sunday, and according to?the sheriff's office, were said to have been last seen at a Sissonville, W.Va., bar around 3 a.m., before they planned to go four-wheeling.

MTV suspended production of "Buckwild" in the wake of the death of Gandee. Last month, the network renewed the show for a second season. In a statement to TODAY.com on Monday, MTV said, "We are shocked and saddened by the terrible news about Shain Gandee, and those involved in this tragic incident. We are waiting for more information but at this time, our main concern is for the Gandee family and their friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Shain had a magnetic personality, with a passion for life that touched everyone he met and we will miss him dearly."

Shain, along with "Buckwild" co-star Shae Bradley, appeared on TODAY in January to defend their then-new show from critics who feared their on-screen antics would reinforce negative stereotypes about West Virginians.

Shain's defense of the show now strikes a sad tone. "You only live once, so live it up," he said.

According to Shain's father, the young reality TV star did just that.

"I spoke with Shain?s father, who is devastated as you can imagine,? show producer J.P. Williams told The Hollywood Reporter. "But he said something that I thought was pretty profound, which is that his son died doing what he loved to do."

Sen. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, who in December called the show a "travesty," expressed his condolences over Shain's death Monday. In a statement to TODAY.com, he said, "My family and I join all West Virginians in praying for the Gandee family as they go through this difficult time."

Nicolay Melanoma Foundation (JMNMF) presented Elizabeth Shenk, a student in both the Boston University Biomedical Engineering Department and the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) Pharmacology Training Program with one of ten, nationally competitive, 2013 "Research Scholar Awards" (RSA). The $10,000 grants support exceptional graduate student melanoma research and also provide distinction to lab directors, universities and cancer research institutions across the U.S.

The JMNMF is the first program in the U.S. to fund graduate student melanoma researchers. The Research Scholar Award program was initially piloted with the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in 2006, and expanded nationally to benefit the broader academic, scientific, clinical and patient communities and encourage larger numbers of students to choose melanoma research as their professional career path. To date 146 students and 47 cancer research centers are distinguished through their active involvement in this nationally-renowned program.

Shenk graduated with honors and high distinction from Penn State in May 2010 and subsequently enrolled in the two Boston University PhD programs. She works under Rhoda Alani, MD, BUSM's Herbert Mescon Chair of Dermatology, and collaborates with Joyce Wong, PhD, and Mario Cabodi, PhD, both of BU's College of Engineering Biomedical Engineering department.

Shenk's research aims to determine which tumors, specifically melanomas, are likely to metastasize using a three dimensional engineered platform. She has been instrumental in creating the cellular model of this system, which is expected to be used to develop novel therapies targeting the metastatic progress on an individualized basis for patients at risk for metastasis.

According to Regina Shannon Bodnar, JMNMF Chair, "Our Foundation's 'Research Scholar Awards' are invaluable at the grassroots level, to specifically grow interest in melanoma research, at leading cancer research centers nationwide. If we can attract the brightest young minds, that are considering or are already within the nation's cancer research pipelines, to pursue a career in melanoma research we're that much closer to better understanding the disease, identifying the means for effective treatments and, most importantly, finding a cure for this deadly and increasingly prevalent disease."

Quantum cryptography has entered the friendly skies. A precise beam of photons sent from an airplane allowed researchers on the ground to create a nearly unbreakable encryption key to protect information. The experiment, reported March 31 in Nature Photonics, is an important step toward creating a secure global communication network based on beaming photons to and from satellites.

?It is a technical tour de force,? says Seth Lloyd, a mechanical engineer at MIT who was not involved in the study.

The idea of exploiting quantum mechanics to secure communication lines is not new: Since the 1980s, scientists have created encryption keys with sets of photons whose individual spins are known only to the sender and receiver. If a third party eavesdrops on the conversation, the photon spins change, alerting the communicating parties to stop exchanging information.

The impediment to any quantum communication, however, is establishing a robust connection that allows sender and receiver to detect and manipulate photons one by one. That?s hard enough to accomplish between stationary points (SN: 6/30/12, p. 10), but physicist Sebastian Nauerth of Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and his team beamed the photons from an airplane flying at nearly 300 kilometers per hour.

The researchers installed a laser at the bottom of the plane that sent a narrow beam of photons to a ground station 20 kilometers away. The signal was strong enough and the tracking precise enough that a sender on the plane and a receiver on the ground would be able to establish a quantum encryption key, the researchers report. Such a key could one day be used to decode messages sent from anywhere in the world and relayed via satellite.

Artificial spleen to treat bloodstream infections: Sepsis therapeutic device under development

Mar. 30, 2013 ? The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University announced today that it was awarded a $9.25 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to further advance a blood-cleansing technology developed at the Institute with prior DARPA support, and help accelerate its translation to humans as a new type of sepsis therapy.

The device will be used to treat bloodstream infections that are the leading cause of death in critically ill patients and soldiers injured in combat.

To rapidly cleanse the blood of pathogens, the patient's blood is mixed with magnetic nanobeads coated with a genetically engineered version of a human blood 'opsonin' protein that binds to a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and toxins. It is then flowed through microchannels in the device where magnetic forces pull out the bead-bound pathogens without removing human blood cells, proteins, fluids, or electrolytes -- much like a human spleen does. The cleansed blood then flows back to the patient.

"In just a few years we have been able to develop a suite of new technologies, and to integrate them to create a powerful new device that could potentially transform the way we treat sepsis," said Wyss founding director and project leader, Don Ingber, M.D., Ph.D. "The continued support from DARPA enables us to advance our device manufacturing capabilities and to obtain validation in large animal models, which is precisely what is required to enable this technology to be moved towards testing in humans."

The team will work to develop manufacturing and integration strategies for its core pathogen-binding opsonin and Spleen-on-a-Chip fluidic separation technologies, as well as a novel coating technology called "SLIPS," which is a super-hydrophobic coating inspired from the slippery surface of a pitcher plant that repels nearly any material it contacts. By coating the inner surface of the channels of the device with SLIPS, blood cleansing can be carried out without the need for anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting.

In addition to Ingber, the multidisciplinary team behind this effort includes Wyss core faculty and Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science faculty member Joanna Aizenberg, Ph.D., who developed the SLIPS technology; Wyss senior staff member Michael Super, Ph.D., who engineered the human opsonin protein; and Mark Puder, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School who will be assisting with animal studies.
