Review: SOL: Exodus (PC) | Video Game News & Reviews - Bits 'n ...

Posted by Chad M. on Friday, February 3, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

The golden age of the space combat sim is behind us- we?re probably not going to see a resurrection of TIE Fighter or Wing Commander anytime soon. However, there are still developers out there keeping of the dreams of starfighting glory alive. One of those developers is Seamless Entertainment, who have recently released their take on the classic genre.

Set in a far future when Earth?s sun is burning out, SOL: Exodus puts you in the cockpit of a United Colonies of SOL fighter as you lead the remnants of the UCS ?military forces against the Children of Dawn, an army of militant religious zealots bent on wiping out anyone who doesn?t embrace the destruction imminent in the dying sun. As you lead the eponymous Exodus, the CoD forces will harry you and make your life miserable every step of the way.

Blowing up reactors makes you feel like Wedge Antilles.

The gameplay is fairly easy to pick up, and falls on the more arcade-ish side of the space sim spectrum, lacking complexities like subsystem damage or customizable loadouts. Still, the game doesn?t do all the work for you, and you?ll have to pull some fancy flight maneuvers, hack transmission nodes on enemy vessels, and switch between targets on the fly, as well as keep steady aim (enemy gunships make sure that your missiles can?t do all the work). The hacking mechanic is well implemented, forcing you to target a hack point, then watch for the code that appears and then select the code. This can have cool effects like turning missiles against your enemies or revealing the ship?s weak points- however, you can only do it at certain scripted points and can?t, say, take out the frigates in the tutorial with it.

The game doesn?t offer you a choice of fighters, offering only the standard Hades starfighter, but this is justified by being part of a ragtag remnant fleet. Your ship is adequately equipped with a pair of automatic guns, a hard-hitting energy weapon called the MAG cannon, and a complement of guided missiles (which were unfortunately nerfed a bit in the last patch so you can?t really ?Fire and forget? anymore). The enemy fleet has a bigger variety of ships, ranging from cannon fodder fighters to upgraded gunships and elite fighters, as well as capital ships and the specialized ADD, which is like a robotic leech that attaches to your own capships and transports.

The controls for the game are fully customizable, and I used my joystick/throttle setup (a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X) through the campaign, which played without a problem. I also replayed the tutorial with the Xbox 360 gamepad, which also played smoothly and was easy enough to get into. The game also gives you the option to play with mouse and keyboard, but I?d recommend a stick or, if you don?t have a joystick available, a gamepad.

The game features 8 missions including the prologue/tutorial, with a decent variety of objectives in each, although many of them boil down to ?protect the Atlas? (your home base/carrier) and ?destroy the enemy capship?. There are usually secondary objectives which, when accomplished, will add to your mission score and possibly net you bonuses that can be used to upgrade your fighter (although some of the later mission challenges are daunting). There are also a few missions which are less about defense and more about pure dogfighting, and I have to admit that these were my personal favorites.

Graphically, the game is competent and often colorful, although as it uses the Unreal engine it is occasionally prone to texture pop-in. They mostly stay smooth at full settings (with the exception of the final mission in early releases, although this has since been remedied with a patch.). The fighters and capships all have interesting designs, and I particularly love the launch deck, which is reminiscent of the Viper launch sequences in the original Battlestar Galactica series. The character portraits are also quite good, with the UCS all having a military bearing, the sole civilian having a professionsl appearance, and the CoD all looking appropriately insane.

The sound effects are what you would expect. No, sound doesn?t travel in space in reality. Willing suspension of disbelief applies here as in most science fiction. Of course, the game would seem a lot less lively without the whoosh of afterburners, the electric splash of the MAG cannon and the beep of the incoming missile indicator. In addition, the voices are very well done and fit the characters well, with special note to the deliciously hammy Children of Dawn commanders. Their frequent proclamations of your impending doom fit their villainy well, and make for some fun bad guys.

Sometimes you'll get a little help from friends- like this missile launcher.

The initial release of the game was riddled with bugs and balance issues, but the Seamless crew have been active on the Steam forums, and more importantly have been listening to user concerns (including some of my own issues with framerate in the final mission, which were resolved in the 02/01 patch). The team has shown that they?re willing to make the game more user friendly- refining the tutorial to make it a more comprehensive example of how to fly and fight, as well as dealing with issues regarding the hacking feature.

The Final Verdict

The game is not the second coming of Wing Commander or Freespace, and coming from a small independent team I don?t know why so many are expecting something of this magnitude. It?s a rather short game, with only 8 missions in the campaign (clocking in at 6 hours for me), although you can go back to reply any mission after you?ve completed it. It offers a nice challenge for newcomers to the genre and a fun diversion for veterans. It?s not perfect, but it?s a genuinely good game made by a team with some serious love for sci-fi space combat. At $9.99 USD, SOL: Exodus is definitely worth checking out.Bits 'n' Bytes Gaming Recommended

Take-Two quarterly revenue falls on NBA video game (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Take-Two Interactive's third-quarter revenue missed Wall Street expectations after the video game maker sold fewer copies of its basketball video game, "NBA 2K12", than expected.

Take-Two's revenue fell to $236.3 million compared with $334.3 million a year earlier and were below analysts' expectations of $249.16 million, according to Thomson Reuters

I/B/E/S.

The company reported net income of $14.1 million, or 16 cents a share compared with $40.86 million, or 45 cents per share a year ago.

Egypt police, protesters clash after soccer riot (AP)

CAIRO ? Egyptian police fired tear gas Thursday at thousands of demonstrators outside the Interior Ministry protesting the security forces' failure to prevent a soccer riot that killed more than 70 people.

Anger has been building as the public and lawmakers blamed the country's military rulers for the bloodshed, the latest to signal rapidly deteriorating security in the country since Hosni Mubarak's fall nearly a year ago.

The protests started as a peaceful march by Egyptians angry over the police inaction from the headquarters of Al-Ahly, one of Egypt's most popular soccer clubs, to the area outside the ministry building near Tahrir Square, the epicenter of last year's popular uprising that ousted Mubarak.

Security forces guarding the area were separated from the more than 10,000 protesters by concrete blocs and barbed wire, but tensions rose as protesters advanced toward them, cursing and removing some of the barriers. They also raised their shoes in the air and hurled stones. Police responded with heavy tear gas, sending demonstrators running, with some passing out and falling to the ground.

Some tried to move big concrete blocs erected around the ministry since November, when clashes between the police and protesters then left more than 40 people dead.

In scenes reminiscent of those clashes, protesters set tires on fire, sending black smoke in the air. Motorcycle drivers ferried some of those wounded from the site as ambulances were unable to get through. Egyptian state TV said 100 people had passed out from the tear gas.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement the protesters had cut the barbed wire, and crossed over the concrete blocs to reach the roads leading to the headquarters. It urged the protesters "to listen to the sound of wisdom ... at these critical moments" to prevent the spread of chaos.

Wednesday's riot at the stadium in Port Said erupted when Al-Masry fans stormed the field following a rare 3-1 win against Al-Ahly, one of Egypt's most popular clubs, but the violence went beyond the deep sports rivalry between the teams.

A network of rabid soccer fans known as Ultras vowed vengeance, accusing the police of intentionally letting rivals attack them because they have been at the forefront of protests over the past year, first against Mubarak and now the military.

Many members of die-hard soccer fans who were among the protesters vowed to storm the ministry.

"Either they (police) will die or we will die," said Islam, a member of the Ultras, said. "We are willing to die for the blood of martyrs."

He declined to give his last name because of the volatility of the situation.

(AP) ? U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon has harshly criticized Israel's continued settlement construction and urged it to submit detailed proposals in low-level border talks with the Palestinians.

Ban met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday to persuade him not to walk away from the talks. Abbas said Israel "didn't present encouraging offers" so far, but that he would resume contacts if it does.

The Palestinians say Israeli settlement building on occupied lands they want for a state is a key obstacle to resuming full-fledged negotiations. With Abbas by his side, Ban affirmed that "all Israeli settlements are contrary to international law, and prejudice" the outcome of a final peace deal.

He urged Abbas not to let the current talks lose momentum.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon pressed Israel on Wednesday to do more to get flagging Mideast peace efforts back on track, calling for a halt in West Bank settlement construction and urging the Israelis to submit concrete proposals on the key issues of borders and security ties with a future Palestine.

Ban is visiting Israel and the Palestinian areas on a mission to salvage the latest efforts to restart peace talks. A month of low-level discussions between Israel and the Palestinians ended last week without any breakthroughs, and it remains unclear whether they will resume the dialogue.

"We are at a critical moment for Israel and the region," Ban said. "I remain hopeful that the direct, frequent exchanges between the parties with continue."

Formal peace talks have stalled for more than three years, in large part over the settlement issue. The Palestinians say there is no point in negotiating as long as Israel continues to settle its population in the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? captured areas that the Palestinians want for their future state.

Some 500,000 Israelis now live in these areas, and this week Netanyahu's government approved new financial incentives meant to lure more Israelis to the West Bank.

Continued settlement "does not help the ongoing peace process," Ban said. "They should refrain from further settlement for the sake of ongoing peace talks. This can be a way of expressing goodwill gestures."

Netanyahu appeared to rebuff Ban's request, saying the question of settlements "should be part of the final peace talks and final peace agreements."

The Palestinians have demanded a halt in settlement construction before returning to the negotiating table. Last month's low-level discussions, mediated by Jordan, ended without any Israeli commitment to freeze settlement building or progress on other issues, like proposed borders and security arrangements.

The Palestinians have not yet decided whether to continue the talks, but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas sounded pessimistic Wednesday.

"By refusing to recognize the borders of the independent Palestinian state and to stop building in the Palestinian territories, Israel has blocked all international attempts to revive the peace process and start direct negotiations," Abbas was quoted by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The talks in Jordan were meant to clear the way for the resumption of full-fledged peace talks and a final peace agreement by the end of the year. They are taking place under the auspices of the international "Quartet" of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., European Union, Russia and the United Nations.

The Quartet has asked both sides to promptly submit detailed proposals on borders and security. The Palestinians believe the deadline was on Jan. 26 and have already submitted their proposals. Israel believes the deadline is in April and has only submitted vague principles on border arrangements.

"I also hope that Israel will be forthcoming with its own concrete proposals on territory and security, as called for by the Quartet," Ban said.

Responding to Ban's comments, Netanyahu said he recognizes "there has to be an agreement, probably a painful agreement for us given our passion for these historic lands." But he complained that "the real cause of this conflict" is the Palestinians refusal to recognize Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people.

Israel has also accused the state-run Palestinian media of broadcasting hatred and incitement against Israel and Jews. Asked about the alleged incitement, Ban said: "Hate speeches or provocations, they are not helpful, they are not acceptable."

Later Wednesday, Ban toured the site of the first planned Palestinian city in the West Bank. Construction of the new city, called Rawabi, has been held up by Israeli security concerns about a planned access road, but developers said they hope to complete the project by 2013.

Ban said he visited the project to encourage sustainable development and to express his concern about lack of progress in peace efforts. "To live in a viable, independent and sovereign state of Palestine is a long overdue aspiration of the Palestinian people," Ban told reporters. "That is why I am here."

Later Wednesday, he was set to meet with Abbas.

Clinton: Syria not another Libya

Speaking at the U.N. Security Council US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says, "It is time for the international community to put aside our own differences and send a clear message of support to the people of Syria."

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 4:45 p.m. ET: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Security Council to adopt the Arab League plan for a political process to end the violence in Syria, saying it?would be different from U.N. efforts to pacify Libya.

The?Arab League plan?calls for Syrian President Bashar Assad to transfer his powers to his deputy to prepare for elections.

"I know that some members here may be concerned that the Security Council is headed toward another Libya," she said. "That is a false analogy."

Updated at 3:45 p.m. ET: Western and Arab nations launched a major diplomatic offensive at the U.N. on Tuesday in hopes of overcoming Russia's opposition to a resolution demanding that Syrian President Bashar Assad relinquish power, The Associated Press reported.

Nabil Elaraby, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, speaks at the U.N. in New York on Tuesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the British and French foreign ministers traveled to New York for the afternoon Security Council session on the situation in Syria.

Nabil Elaraby, the chief of the Arab League, called on the Security Council to take 'rapid and decisive action' on Syria, Reuters reported

"Realizing the hopes of the Syrian people is in your hands," Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani told council members, asking them to adopt the resolution, based on the Arab League's peace plan for the country. "It is part of your responsibility under the (U.N.) charter," he said, according to The Associated Press.?

Updated at 12:35 p.m. ET: Syrian leader Bashar Assad cannot sustain his hold on power and it is a matter of time before his leadership falls, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told senators, according to Reuters.

"I personally believe it's a question of time before Assad falls, but that's the issue, it could be a long time," Clapper told a Senate intelligence committee hearing. "Protraction of these demonstrations, the opposition continues to be fragmented, but I do not see how he can sustain his rule of Syria."

Ayman Mohyeldin / NBC News

President Bashar Assad's regime is intensifying its violent crackdown on Syrian protesters, despite international pressure. NBC News' Ayman Mohyeldin is one of the few Western journalists to have been granted permission inside Syria in recent weeks, click to see some of his photos.

Meanwhile, British newspaper the Guardian reported that a copy of the draft U.N. resolution demanding Assad step aside tried to address Russian concerns that the vote could open the door to western military intervention.

The draft obtained by the newspaper said the council is "reaffirming its strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, emphasising the need to resolve the current crisis in Syria peacefully, and stressing that nothing in this resolution compels states to resort to the use of force or the threat of force," according to the newspaper.

The draft did not entirely exclude the possibility of military action, however, the newspaper reported.

Published at 8:30 a.m. ET: A senior Russian diplomat warned Tuesday that a draft U.N. resolution demanding Syrian President Bashar Assad step aside is a "path to civil war," as Syrian troops crushed pockets of resistance by rebel soldiers on the outskirts of Damascus.

The U.N. Security Council was to meet Tuesday to discuss the draft, backed by Western and some Arab powers. But Russia would likely veto any punitive action.

"The Western draft Security Council resolution on Syria does not lead to a search for compromise," Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov wrote on Twitter. "Pushing this resolution is a path to civil war."

Russia has been one of Assad's strongest backers as he tries to crush an uprising that began nearly 11 months ago. In October, Moscow vetoed the first council attempt to condemn Syria's crackdown and has shown little sign of budging in its opposition.

President Bashar Assad's regime has slaughtered thousands of people since March, according to the United Nations. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

The draft text of the resolution, seen by The Associated Press, insists there will be no use of foreign forces in the country. It calls on Assad's regime to immediately put "an end to all human rights violations and attacks against those exercising their rights to freedom of expression."

It calls on Assad to delegate his "full authority to his deputy" to allow a national unity government to lead transition to a democratic system. The text, the drafting of which has been led by Morocco, insists it does not compel "states to resort to the use of force, or the threat of force."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday he hoped the Security Council would reflect international will when it deliberates the resolution.

"I sincerely hope the Security Council will be united and speak in a coherent manner reflecting the wishes of the international community," Ban told reporters in the Jordanian capital Amman. "This is crucially important."

China, which like Russia has a veto in the council, also has reservations about the draft. Russia and China vetoed a European-drafted resolution in October that condemned Syria and threatened it with sanctions.

"I don't think we can go on like this," Ban said.

Syria's crackdown on protesters and anti-government fighters had gone on despite a now-suspended Arab League monitoring mission and action was needed to stop the bloodshed, he said.

"Even with the monitoring missions having been there, more than a few hundred have been killed ... every day tens of people are killed ... this should stop immediately," Ban said. "It is crucially important for the Security Council to act on this."

Escalating violence
Meanwhile Tuesday, government troops were deploying in "massive numbers" to the suburbs of Damascus, the U.K.-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told NBC News. The group said at least 11 people had been killed as of Tuesday morning.

The Observatory, which supports the Free Syrian Army, said government forces were targeting civilians who were aiding defectors, NBC reported.

Fighting has escalated in the past several days with at least 100 people killed on Monday alone.

The office of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay voiced alarm on Tuesday at the escalating violence and called on Syrian authorities to "stop the killing of civilians" while also urging opposition forces to show restraint.

"It does look like there's a very dangerous and alarming escalation taking place including right in the suburbs of Damascus," U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva.

"So once again we urge the Syrian authorities to stop the killing of civilians in Syria. And we also urge the opposition fighters to take extreme caution too and ensure that there is no more unnecessary killing," he said.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the uprising as of mid-December, according to Pillay's office.

Despite "high rates of casualties" since then, it has been impossible to verify incidents and lists of victims compiled by five or six human rights groups on the ground, Colville said.

Investing Strategy For the Newbie

by Jessica Drew

Having an investing strategy is crucial to investing your money wisely, which is the best way to achieve your financial goals. With taxes and the rate of inflation accounted for, investing your money is the only way to ensure that you actually make money over time rather than fall behind in the long run. But, there are so many options to consider when planning an investment strategy it can all seem very overwhelming.

While the details of your investing strategy will be unique to your individual needs and the needs of your family there are some tried and true steps you can take to make sure you make the best decisions no matter what you invest in:

Start investing by first setting realistic goals. Do not expect to make huge gains on stock market tips overnight. Experts maintain that a 10 to 12% return on your investments is realistic. Still, you may not even make this every year, but it is at least an achievable goal to reach for.

Create your own investing strategy based on your own needs and goals. Think about what you want to achieve and the time frame you have to achieve it. Then write out a detailed investment plan that will realistically allow you to reach these goals. Be conservative in your estimates and stick to the plan!

o Make investing part of your daily routine and monthly budget. Monitor your investments daily to ensure that they are maintaining a good status and working toward your financial goals at the pace you have planned. Also, and especially if you do not have a lot of money to invest upfront, consider these two investing strategies to get off to a good start:

- Dollar Cost Averaging: with this investing strategy you invest $20, $50, $250, or what ever you can afford on a monthly basis. By setting yourself a fixed amount to invest with each month, not only will you average buying in at a lower cost over time, but you will also make investing part of your monthly budget and slowly grow your investments as the months pass.

- DRIP investing: this investing strategy allows you to buy small amounts of stock regularly, without paying outrageous prices for commissions. Through DRIP investing you will also be eligible for the company?s dividends reinvestment plan (DRIP). A growing number of companies are allowing for this type of investing and will sell shares directly to investors.

o Mitigate your risks! There are several investment strategies to do this that apply to all forms of investments:

- Do Not invest any amount of money that leaves you feeling uneasy

- Do Not invest in anything you do not fully understand

- Do Not invest until you feel ready

- Do invest aggressively for the long term and conservatively for the short term

- Do diversify your assets and investments

- Do avoid scams and only work with reputable and established companies

If you do decide you want to enlist professional help in formulating your investing strategy and decide to hire a personal broker, first check out the broker or the broker?s investment firm to see if any complaints have been filed. You can obtain a detailed report by calling the securities regulation office of the state the broker does business in. Beware also that most personal brokers charge high fees.
