The same old bad argument against gay marriage | Pharyngula

Riley Balling, patent attorney, is certain that gay marriage will affect his marriage. Why? Well, he splutters on in a long op-ed in the Star Tribune, but all he manages to say is the children, because?the children, that?s why.

For many of us who favor traditional marriage, marriage is about raising children in a healthy environment. Thus, any change to the definition of marriage affects our marriage. Our ?traditional? marriages and the children they produce are our greatest source of happiness, and we desire that our children will live in a world that will promote their ability to make the same choices that brought us happiness.

Shorter Riley: ?I have defined marriage, and marriage is defined this way, and therefore changing the definition of marriage changes marriage by definition. Oh, and my marriage is all about pooping out kids, therefore your marriage damn well better be too.?

You know, my marriage is pretty much the very definition of straight, conventional, and middle class: I married the girl next door when we were in our twenties, we had three children approximately 3.5 years apart, we have a mortgage and live in a nice middle class neighborhood, we sent the kids to public school, they grew up, they moved out and got jobs and lives of their own. If there?s a poster for the standard nuclear family, just like one in a 1950s sitcom, we?re on it.

But our marriage was about us, not the kids. We got married because we loved each other and wanted to make a partnership in all things?and kids weren?t even on our radar in the beginning. We were finishing our educations. Our marriage was about cooperation and sex and shared interests and mutual respect. We also had kids later on, and we were happy about that, but that was never solely what our relationship was about, and we?d still be happy together even without them. We had our last child in 1990; finishing that chore did not lead to the dissolution of our partnership. We now have a completely child-free home, and we?re not at a loss for things to do with our lives.

So I can appreciate that if Riley and his spouse want to marry to build a home for kids, that?s just wonderful, they can do that with no obstacles from me ? I won?t be sponsoring bills to prohibit his reason for getting married. But I hope for the sake of his and his wife?s sanity and happiness that they also have additional reasons to want to live together. They don?t have to have all of our reasons ? if he doesn?t need a mutual support partnership to get through the strains of graduate school, that?s fine ? but I don?t understand why he can?t grasp the idea that people have a huge cloud of reasons to find happiness and productivity in a long-term relationship, and that not everyone will have an identical set of reasons.

There are many who tout the modern definition, and we are susceptible to these influences. As we listen to these influences, we change our view of marriage and our marital relationship accordingly. Same-sex marriage will only increase these influences and make it harder to promote traditional marriage.

Yes! Exactly! Our view of marriage will?evolve!

Mr Riley seems to be a Mormon (and isn?t it sweet that the Mormons continue their tradition of afflicting other states outside of Morridor with their narrow and bigoted views?). I presume he?s not in a polygamous relationship. Or is he trying to argue that we should promote the 19th century traditional Mormon marriage?

Why should we accept the dogmatic views of a member of a freaky-assed Christian cult as an authority on what constitutes ?traditional marriage?? We?re in Minnesota! Clearly, that means we should only listen to lonely Norwegian bachelors of the Lutheran persuasion? or was that a second-generation Hmong medical student? Or a recent immigrant from Somalia? Or maybe we should be really traditional, and consult the Dakota elders on one of the Indian reservations ? they?re the ones who?d have a good handle on exactly what the longest tradition on this bit of earth has been.

Or, just maybe, we should let people living in the now decide what social arrangements give them the greatest satisfaction, happiness, and success.

Although not all are able to participate in a traditional marriage that yields children, we all benefit by its establishment in creating strong homes for the next generation with strong direction from self-sacrificing parents. The disestablishment of this ideal affects us all.

OK. But, you know, ?creating strong homes for the next generation with strong direction from self-sacrificing parents? sounds precisely like what some gay families want to do. Why don?t we let them?

I also don?t think that telling everyone that there is this magical ideal which is the sole purpose for marriage is a good idea. Some people are not suited to, or not interested in, having children. Are we going to tell them that they can?t get married unless they buy into Riley Balling?s narrow definition of what marriage is for, even if they?re boring straight people? Are we going to stop by their house after they?ve been married for a few years and chastise them if the woman hasn?t gotten knocked up yet?

Also, I?ve got to say that if your ideal is the two-person heterosexual lifelong relationship, the greatest enemy of that are the patriarchal religious assholes who turn a partnership into a prison for women?who naturally and intelligently want to escape. If we really want to improve the likelihood of progeny-producing stable relationships, I say we should ban religious marriages, not gay ones. Godless relationships based on romantic love all the way! Yes, the only marriages allowed should be marriages exactly like mine.

I?m sure Riley Balling will be able to sympathize with that sentiment. We have found common ground.

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

Odds and Ends: EADS faces unhappiness over BAE merger; EU ...

> Airbus, EADS > Odds and Ends: EADS faces unhappiness over BAE merger; EU rejects US WTO compliance claims; SPEEA?Update

EADS unhappiness: In the weeks after the merger with BAE Systems was announced, it?s clear that the proposed merger with EADS hasn?t ben well received by shareholders or the EADS governments. This Reuters story details the reluctance from the German government. Even the head of BAE has been quoted saying the union won?t proceed if BAE?s US defense business is jeopardized. Boeing, after initially saying it sees no impact, now wants a full US defense review and plans to undertake its own evaluation. Some suggest Boeing will try and bring the WTO subsidies issue into the case.

Our take is that Boeing?s initial reaction was based on the largely non-competitive defense lines of BAE and EADS but belatedly realized the strength the combined companies would have to be future competitors across from Boeing?s lines.

But the larger issue seems to be the future role of the French and German governments in the new company. Their shares will be diluted and governance influence will eliminated under the proposed merger. The government influence has historically meant Airbus, the dominate EADS subsidiary, has had to carefully split jobs between France and Germany rather than being free to make commercial decisions without political considerations.

As readers know, we have advocated for years that the governments need to get out of Airbus? hair.

The Washington Post has this story, aptly characterizing the ?blood fued? between Airbus and Boeing.

WTO Claims: It?s absolutely no surprise that the European Union rejected claims by the US it is now in compliance with the WTO ruling that Boeing received illegal subsidies. The tit-for-tat continues.

Airbus issued this statement today:

The WTO final verdict had called in March for:?

  • Withdrawal of ?at least $5.3 billion? of federal subsidies already received by Boeing.
  • Elimination of an additional $2 billion in illegal state and local subsidies due in the future under existing illegal schemes.
  • Termination of all U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and NASA research grants to Boeing, including funding, Boeing use of government facilities and the illegal transfer of IP rights to Boeing

The EU?s requested 12 Bn annual penalty is justified by the WTO panel confirmation that the effect of the subsidies is significantly larger than their face value in light of their ?particularly pervasive? nature.? For example, according to the WTO, Boeing would not have been able to launch the 787 without illegal subsidies.? Today?s request belies Boeing?s argument that the WTO?s findings will have no relevant consequences for Boeing.?

SPEEA Update: Seattle Times has this update on the SPEEA-Boeing situation.

How the Kindle Paperwhite Got Its Shine [Video]

We know first-hand that the new Kindle Paperwhite is a stunning little device, but how did it get so good? The Amazon employee's who developed the reader have gotten together to explain. Interestingly enough, they cite the ultimate goal as being able to make a device that sort of "disappears" as you use it. That's going to be tough with a screen that pretty. [Slashgear] More »

PFT: Baltimore fans give officials a standing ovation

Rex RyanAP

When Jets coach Rex Ryan told Joe McKnight that he?s been traded from the offense to the defense, McKnight took that as an indication that he?s not good enough as a running back.

Ryan says that was the wrong message for McKnight to get. Instead, Ryan thinks McKnight should take it as a compliment that the coaches think he has the talent to move to cornerback, even though he hasn?t played there since high school.

?I think Joe misunderstood,? Ryan told reporters today. ?We?re trying to teach Joe our defense. The coverages and things like that. He still has a role on offense. It?s not that he?s being forgotten as a running back, that?s not the case. I want him to learn the coverages and things like that on defense. The way the league is now, you almost can?t have enough corners. They?re going three, four, five, receivers or something, so you have to be able to match up. The one thing I know from a physical standpoint, [is] that Joe can, from a talent and a physical standpoint, he can match up. He can run. He?s got size. He?s got some natural instincts, and that?s what we?ve seen. When we used to put him on scout team, that?s what we saw. Yesterday, he actually picked off all three quarterbacks. That?s a good thing and a bad thing.?

Ryan heard that McKnight took it as a criticism of his ability as a running back, and that he thinks he didn?t communicate well enough to McKnight.

?That was certainly not the message that I wanted to send to him, so I wasn?t clear on that,? Ryan said. ?He?s got talent as a running back. The one thing I know about Joe is when given an opportunity, as a kick returner, he led the NFL as a kick returner, so I think that?s pretty impressive. He was the number one kid in the country coming out of high school. His talent is pretty special. I had a coach from USC tell me that the day he walked on campus he was their best corner. They wanted to play him at running back, but that?ll give you an indication of the kind of talent that Joe has.?

Ultimately, a player?s job is to play whatever position his coach tells him to play, and if Ryan thinks McKnight can help the Jets more as a cornerback than as a running back, then McKnight is a cornerback. McKnight shouldn?t have a problem with that.

Important Information To Know Before Making A Real Estate ...

Purchasing real estate is extremely frightening for anyone, but it definitely is for those who have never done it. But, it can make a great investment, and when you choose the right property, you can enjoy a better quality of life right away. This article is filled with great real estate buying tips and advice.

When considering a home, do not forget to research the entire neighborhood the home is in. If the neighborhood isn?t any good, then you will be miserable, even if the property itself is fine. You must be aware of your surroundings so that you know what possible issues could arise.

When you are looking into real estate, understand that this could be your home for a long time. If you are planning on having kids, make sure that you purchase a home that has a good school nearby.

TIP! Do not let the price of a house you are interested in be influenced by the fact it has a view. The view might not be something that is worth it for the next buyer.

Try to contact your former clients around the holidays and during anniversaries of their purchases. Additional contact from you will help them remember how valuable your services were during their real estate experience. After you finish speaking with them, let them know that you would appreciate it if they felt comfortable referring you to their family members and friends.

When searching the property market for potential purchases, you need to be both realistic and patient. It can take some time to find the perfect property that will help you meet your goals and work with your business strategy.

Before buying a home, get an inspector to examine it. You don?t want to uncover any major problems after you have signed the purchase contract. Not only will this cost a lot, you might need to change your living situation until it?s fixed.

TIP! A buyer?s checklist will help you understand the real estate buying process, and these forms can be acquired from your Realtor. Many Realtors will have a checklist that will cover every aspect of buying a home; from finding the right house that is in your budget to finalizing the mortgage.

With current markets, now is a great time to purchase real estate. Property values are lower than ever, meaning some great deals can be found. If you are financially secure, seize your chance to get a great piece of property at a low price. Eventually, the market will rise again over time, making your investment profitable.

Before you sign your lease agreement, ask the landlord about who is going to take care of the garden. You should know that in some cases, a renter is expected to take care of a yard or garden or to pay someone to do the job. Many places have this task included into the monthly payments.

Before you put an offer on a home, measure it yourself. You will feel better once you know that the physical square footage is equivalent to what the seller has listed publicly. These numbers should be fairly close to each other, to a tolerance of about 100 sq ft. If they don?t match, find out more about the property and any changes that were made.

TIP! If your employment is unstable, take precautions if you are planning to purchase a home. When you put your John Hancock on the mortgage paperwork, the responsibility of making the monthly payments is on your head, regardless of any changes in circumstances.

Look at properties and do your homework before you buy them. Even for rental property, you should look at some important features before purchasing. One of these is sustainability. Has the property been well-maintained, so that you won?t need to make expensive repairs? The second thing to consider it the location. Where the property is located should be a critical part of your decision, because it will be for your tenants. A good investment should be in a safe neighborhood with access to different stores, schools and job opportunities. You should consider the income in the area in which you are buying. This is different from physical location, because you should keep in mind that a high rent area is definitely a better location than a low rent area. In a place with high rent, location is not always as important as it might be for someone with fewer options in a lower rent area.

When deciding on an agent, it is important to have a list of questions already planned out. Ask them not only the number of homes they have sold in the past year, but also, how many were the type of home you are looking to buy. The agent?s responses to these questions will provide you with the information you need to reach a decision.

Just like any other product, your home should have a warranty. When you are buying a new home from the person who built it, or from an owner, get a warranty. The person who built the home should give you a warranty if he or she is confident in their work. The last owner should be prepared to obtain a home warranty that is valid for a minimum period of 12 months in case of any necessary repairs.

TIP! Before you sign a lease agreement for a rental in the future, you should ensure you talk to the future landlord you will have about whether you will have a garden, and if so, who will do the gardening. Some rentals will make you take care of this chore, while others will include a gardener as part of the rent.

You need to hire good representation in the form of a real estate agent after deciding to purchase a property. Someone who is trustworthy is most preferable. For an area you?re unfamiliar with, check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints against agents and how they were resolved. Although real estate agents are doing their job, it?s important to find one that is looking out for your best interests.

Look for homes that carry pre-foreclosure notices. Pre-foreclosure properties are definitely a real estate option to be considered, especially if you have the time to search for the right investment property. When a homeowner is unable to meet payment obligations and is in imminent danger of losing the house, the home is called a pre-foreclosure. You can advertise your own willingness to purchases houses with cash, or consult lenders to get lists of properties approaching pre-foreclosure. No matter how you find the property, speak with the owners to understand the amount they owe, and be prepared to pay them at least a few thousand over that amount. You can sometimes benefit greatly by this method, particularly if the payoff is much lower than market value.

TIP! It is essential to hire a trustworthy real estate agent. It is possible to find information from both the Internet and the Better Business Bureau.

Buying a property is likely to be the largest purchase you make as far as value is concerned, so the decision needs to be weighed appropriately. The advice in this piece can help you steer clear of common real estate traps, and make the best decision

Brazil seeks Google exec arrest over YouTube video

16 hrs.

SAO PAULO???An elections court in Brazil has ordered the arrest of Google's most senior executive in the country after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate.

Google is appealing the order, which follows a similar decision by another Brazilian election judge. In that case, a judge found another senior executive responsible for violating local election law. That decision was overturned last week.

The legal challenges underline broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, such as an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

A spokesman for the regional elections court in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state said on Tuesday that a judge had ordered the arrest of Fabio Jos? Silva Coelho, Google's top executive in Brazil, unless the videos attacking a mayoral candidate were removed.

"Google is appealing the decision that ordered the removal of the video on YouTube because, as a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted to its site," the company said through a spokesman in Brazil.

The arrest warrants for Google executives follow the filing of criminal charges in March against Chevron Corp and Transocean Ltd and 17 of their employees and executives, in a case that showed the Brazilian justice systems' willingness to target senior executives for alleged misdeeds.

Public prosecutors, who have almost total independence to bring cases in Brazil, are seeking jail terms of up to 31 years in the case, which resulted from a November oil spill. Chevron is the No. 2 U.S. oil company. Transocean is the world's largest offshore oil-drill-rig operator.

'What an idiot'?

In Google's case, judges have held executives responsible for resisting the removal of online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. The law bans campaign ads that "offend the dignity or decorum" of a candidate.

Earlier this month an electoral court in the state of Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.

The video clip loaded by the user "Paraiba Humor" seized on a verbal slip by a candidate in a montage remarking, "What an idiot ? give him an F!"

Within days another judge overturned the order to arrest Balthazar, writing that "Google is not the intellectual author of the video, it did not post the file, and for that reason it cannot be punished for its propagation."

The company also defended users' political rights in a statement at the time.

"Google believes that voters have a right to use the Internet to freely express their opinions about candidates for political office, as a form of full exercise of democracy, especially during electoral campaigns," the company wrote.

Google faces frequent legal scrutiny over the limits of users' expression in Brazil, where it opened an office in 2005.

Over the years, the company has received repeated requests from Brazilian authorities to reveal the identity of bloggers and users of its social networking site Orkut, whose posts violated local libel and anti-racism laws.

In the second half of last year, Google removed four Orkut profiles after an electoral court order, the company said on a portion of its website called the Transparency Report.

Man in fatal traffic accident reportedly stealing stop signs just before his death

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who underwent genital cutting as young girls may be at increased risk of physical, sexual or emotional abuse from their husband, a study of women in Mali suggests. The study, of nearly 7,900 women, found that 22 percent of those with genital mutilation said they'd been physically abused by a husband or male partner. That compared with 12 percent of women who'd never been subjected to the procedure. It's estimated that more than 130 million women worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, also known as female "circumcision. ...

Reports: NFL, referees closing in on new deal

Just when it seemed that NFL coaches, players and fans couldn't get any angrier, along came a fiasco that trumped any of the complaints from the weekend. (AP Photo/Mike Roemer)

Two days after a controversial call cost the Green Bay Packers a win, the NFL and the referees' union are reportedly nearing an end to a lockout that put replacement officials on the field since the start of the season.

According to several reports, the NFL and the union are close to a new deal that would allow the league's regular officials to return to work, possibly as early as this weekend. ESPN reported Wednesday that "an agreement in principle is at hand," and The New York Times reported that the sides "were closing in" on a way to end the impasse. ESPN cited unidentified sources from both sides; the Times cited a person briefed on the negotiations.

The NFL declined to confirm that a deal was imminent.

"Until somebody tells me differently, it's not really changed," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Still, even the suggestion that regular refs could be back as early as Sunday was greeted with welcoming words.

"If it's final and they are, I'm sure a lot of people will be happy ? and I'll be one of those guys, too," Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson said on a conference call with reporters from Detroit in advance of the upcoming Vikings-Lions game.

NFL agent David Canter tweeted: "Welcome back real refs. Just remember when you blow a call you'll get no sympathy."

A person briefed on the negotiations told The Associated Press that talks between the league and its officials resumed Wednesday morning after a short break following a 14-hour meeting that started Tuesday. The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the discussions were not made public.

The debate over the use of replacement officials has raged since the start of the season, and boiled over after the final play of the Packers-Seahawks game. A last-second scrum in the end zone was ruled a game-winning touchdown by Seahawks receiver Golden Tate. But Packers players, their fans and much of the football-watching public saw an interception by Green Bay's M.D. Jennings.

"Would you let a Toyota dealership work on your brand new Rolls-Royce? That doesn't work right, does it," Dallas safety Gerald Sensabaugh said Wednesday. "Our brand is so big, it's so important to a lot of people. There's no way you can have guys that don't have experience at that level."

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay's quarterback and the reigning league MVP, used his weekly radio show Tuesday as a platform to lash out at the NFL and question its priorities. However, New England quarterback Tom Brady said he would rather focus on the game and not worry about officiating.

The NFLRA, whose members were locked out in June, wants improved salaries, retirement benefits and other logistical issues. The NFL is proposing a pension freeze and a higher 401(k) match; the union is balking because of the greater risk to the nest egg that comes with the loss of a defined benefit.

And as speculation swirled that a deal was close on Wednesday, the players' association urged caution.

"Having done this before, everyone needs to wait until the ink is dry," NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith tweeted.

The replacement officials previously worked mostly in lower-division college ranks, such as Division III, and in minor professional organizations like the Arena League.

Despite several field fiascos, not everyone is necessarily pointing fingers at the replacements.

"Someone made a good point this morning that maybe we shouldn't be blaming the refs, but blaming the league, the owners, I don't know who it is," Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "Maybe it's not just the officials. We're putting them in tough situations and it can't be easy."

In Cincinnati, coach Marvin Lewis urged the Bengals in a team meeting to not fixate on the replacement-ref issue.

"I told our guys to shut up," Lewis said. "It's none of your business. You have no influence on it. You don't need to worry about it. Just play football."

Even if a deal was at hand, it was still uncertain how it would affect the weekend's games.

"Your loud voices r heard about getting Refs back," Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay wrote on Twitter. "We're desperately trying 2 get it done! We want a deal that improves officiating overall."

(AP) ? The Baltimore Orioles dreaded this doubleheader ever since it became part of their schedule late last month.

Beating the same team twice on the same day is not an easy task, even if the opposition is a last-place club in the midst of a losing streak. And so, after Toronto earned a split with a 9-5 win Monday night, the Orioles shrugged their shoulders and looked ahead to another day of chasing the New York Yankees in the AL East.

"Very hard to sweep a doubleheader in the major leagues," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "It wasn't from a lack of effort. That's why when you get a rainout, you try to play because you know the challenge ahead of you somewhere down the line. The Blue Jays have a lot of pride."

J.P. Arencibia broke open a tight game with a seventh-inning grand slam, leaving the Orioles 1? games out of first place in the division.

In the opener, Adam Jones went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Baltimore to a 4-1 victory. But the Orioles lost a half-game in the standings to the Yankees, who won 6-3 at Minnesota.

The doubleheader came into being after the teams endured a rainout on Aug. 26.

"You never want to play games like this late in the season," Baltimore right fielder Chris Davis said. "But at the same time, if you can win both of them, you help yourself out. Obviously we weren't able to do that."

The Orioles fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap and missed several bases-loaded chances to take the lead before Arencibia connected off Jake Arrieta to give Toronto a 9-4 cushion.

"I think anytime you strand guys on base you know it's a missed opportunity," Davis said.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run for the Blue Jays, who snapped a seven-game skid. Arencibia, who came into the game mired in a 2-for-36 slump, finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Toronto long ago fell out of playoff contention, but the Jays were reminded how fun it is while performing before an enthusiastic crowd of 31,015.

"It's pretty impressive the atmosphere they have here," Arencibia said. "It's a lot of fun to play in that kind of atmosphere."

Ricky Romero (9-14) allowed four runs, eight hits, four walks and a homer in five-plus innings. But a strong performance by the Toronto bullpen enabled the left-hander to end a 13-game losing streak over 15 starts since June 22.

"Good for him and good for us," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "We needed a win and it's been a long time since Ricky's had a W."

Encarnacion put the Blue Jays up 2-0 against Wei-Yin Chen (12-10) with a two-run drive in the first inning. In the second, Arencibia hit a sacrifice fly and Anthony Gose added an RBI single.

Robert Andino singled in two runs in the bottom half, but Baltimore left the bases loaded. Nate McLouth hit an opposite-field drive to left in the fifth to get Baltimore to 4-3, but the Orioles again left the bases full.

After Moises Sierra homered for Toronto in the sixth, the Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in their half, bringing many in the crowd to their feet. Brad Lincoln replaced Romero and gave up a first-pitch RBI single to J.J. Hardy before striking out Jones. Davis followed with a fly ball to Gose in left field, and Taylor Teagarden was thrown out at the plate after tagging up.

Baltimore also loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but scored only once on a double-play grounder.

In the first game, Orioles rookie Steve Johnson (4-0) allowed three hits over five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.62. Half his big league wins have come against Toronto.

Although the Blue Jays got two runners on base in three of the first four innings, Johnson worked out of trouble on each occasion.

Jim Johnson, the fifth Baltimore pitcher, worked the ninth for his major league-best 48th save in 51 opportunities.

Jones' four hits tied a career high. Now in his seventh season, Jones has already set career highs with 32 homers and 101 runs, and the All-Star center fielder needs only three RBIs to eclipse his previous high of 83, set last year.

Jones added a single and a double in the nightcap and has hit safely in 19 of 23 games in September, with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

"Adam relishes competition," Showalter said. "He's obviously had a heck of a year. He's turning into quite a player."

Henderson Alvarez (9-14) gave up four runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 2-3 innings. He is 2-7 in his last 10 starts.

In the fourth, Davis walked and Jones followed with a drive to left to put Baltimore up 2-0. Ryan Flaherty hit a solo shot in the fifth, and Jones singled in the sixth and came home on a double-play grounder.

Toronto scored in the eighth on an RBI double by Rajai Davis. With runners on second and third and two outs, Darren O'Day came in to strike out Kelly Johnson.

NOTES: Toronto purchased the contracts of RHPs Shawn Hill and Bobby Korecky and transferred LHP J.A. Happ (foot) to the 60-day DL. ... Orioles LHP Randy Wolf is experiencing discomfort in his left elbow and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday. ... Seventeen of Jones' HRs have given the Orioles the lead. Baltimore is 23-8 when he homers. ... Toronto's first-game defeat was its sixth straight in Baltimore, its longest single-season skid in Charm City since 1980. The Orioles are 10-6 against the Blue Jays, clinching their first season series win over Toronto since 2004. ... Omar Vizquel got two hits to move into a tie with Mel Ott for 40th on the career list with 2,876.

She Watches Over the Affairs of Her Household- Week 2

Last week I shared how I knew my husband could not trust me, to be the homemaker he needs me to be. I challenged myself, and you, to do the first step of homemaking, which is?working on your heart. To spend every day in the word, and pray to see if you had any rebellion against homemaking.

How did I do??

This challenge has really helped me. I am not really able to do the typical Wake-Up-Early-And-Do-Devotions style of quiet time, so it has been hard to get into a routine. I did my quiet times during nap times, if they happened, or while Mark was putting the kids to bed. So, I now know it CAN be done.?

Did I Learn Anything??

Disclaimer: This is my personal story. I am not saying it is the case for anyone else.

*deep breath*

I have really struggled with depression lately, and this past ?week part of the reason has been made clearer.?We have had a crazy first couple of years of marriage with a?major life event happen on average every 2.5 months since getting married... until now. Mark has a regular job, we are not moving soon, have a newborn, or am pregnant.?That has allowed me the opportunity to not be in survival mode for the first time.?I finally have more time to invest in my relationships with God, my husband, and my children, and to invest in my home. But, I have not been.?Instead I have been in sort of a haze. Unsure of what to do with myself.?I have been distracting myself as much as I can with media and ignoring important things- being?discontent and, though I hate to say it, feeling like "just a mom." ?Our home has not had a good, relaxing, God honoring atmosphere. Well, that is changing. I will be purposefully taking steps to take PRIDE in the fact that I am a homemaker. With God's strength that is. I know this will be a struggle, but also that my God is bigger then my struggles.

How did you do? Did you learn anything? Please tell us in the comments.

Week number 2- I do not know about you but I am ready to dig in deeper. So, here we go.?You need four things to keep a home. The will, a goal, the ability, and a plan. This week we will be talking about the goal. I challenge you, and me, to make a Homemaking Mission Statement. One thing first, It will look different for every person. We are all in different seasons, keeping vastly different homes, and being a helpmeet and mom to vastly different people. That and we ourselves are different.

This week ask AT LEAST 4 people what keeping a home looks like to them. AT LEAST two older women you have deep respect for, your husband, and also pray about it to learn what you need in a home. Then I would like you to prayerfully write a Homemaking Mission Statement rough draft. Through out the rest of week revisit, reavuluate, and rewriting it as needed. Next Monday feel free to share it with us. Sharing will be to inspire NOT to compare.?

Have a lovely week! May God bless you.

Intel confirms next-gen, dual-core Medfield + LTE plans

Android Central

The current crop of "Medfield"-based Intel Atom chips for smartphones has  one major disadvantage compared to much of the ARM-based competition -- it doesn't support 4G LTE connectivity. Regent Intel-based phones like the Motorola RAZR i and Orange San Diego are 3G/HSPA-only, single-core devices. Though these chips boast Intel's Hyperthreading technology for improved multitasking, the chip giant is keen to move into true multi-core territory, while implementing 4G LTE support, allowing it to move into the U.S. market.

Speaking with TechCrunch, Intel's Director of Product Marketing Sumeet Syal said the company was readying LTE products "later this year and ramping into 2013." In the U.S. market in particular, Motorola would be the manufacturer to watch for future LTE-connected Intel-powered phones. Moto has partnered with Intel to develop multiple devices over the next few years, and it's already started with the RAZR i in Europe.

In addition, it should come as no surprise to see Intel readying dual-core Medfield chips to take on higher-end ARM offerings. Syal told TechCrunch "Our next gen product will be a dual-core but again that product will also have hyper threading so essentially… you will also have dual-core with four threads."

It's just the beginning for Intel on Android, and we expect there'll be more to see starting early next year at CES.

IRENA announces the International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference and Exhibition

Accra, Ghana - Sep 18, 2012 (PRN - MySolutionInfo): The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) and the ECOWAS Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) are organising the International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference (IOREC) on 1st and 2nd November 2012 in Accra, Ghana. This event is an official contribution to the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

IOREC aims to address issues related to sustainable rural electrification with the objective of increasing collaboration between public authorities and the private sector. With a focus on Africa, the event will provide a crucial opportunity to identify and discuss the main barriers to the scaling up of rural electrification based on off-grid renewable energy systems. Furthermore, IOREC will represent an important occasion to highlight suitable policies and measures to overcome such barriers, and to share knowledge about innovative financing solutions, technologies and the latest innovations in off-grid renewable energy systems.

The Conference will bring together participants from public institutions, international organizations, financing institutions, academia and private companies that are active in rural electrification and renewable energy.

In parallel with the Conference, starting from 31st October, the Alliance for Rural Electrification is organizing the IOREC Exhibition, to give the private sector the opportunity to present products and projects and to offer all stakeholders ample networking opportunities. Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Electric Dog Fencing: The ...

Many dog keepers emphasise that electric dog fencings are among the most secured kinds of dog containment currently. These have been described as more favored options compared to other modern and standard fences. There are lots of ways that electric dog fencing can ensure the welfare of pet dogs.

You need to train your dog correctly to use these fences so the animal will have a positive experience with the system. Ideally, the training procedure would take from 1 to 4 weeks depending on the moods of your dog and how you can hound the training program.

Most dogs respond to the commands of their trainers definitely particularly if the latter is skilled at dealing with the wayward behavior of their pets. Positive reinforcement is also apparently better than the averse style of training. You will have to bide your time with the dog and know the way to use the collar that forms a component of the package.

Concept of Bounds for Dogs

The electric dog fences operate by setting up border lines that are awfully different to the standard concrete or steel obstructions. Briefly it is more about coaching implement rather than a type of containment for the animal. Dogs should be trained to achieve familiarity with their areas and restrictions. They should know that it is not correct for them to wander away from the yard despite the absence of a physical obstruction.

By the same token, if the electric fence breaks down or even if the dog does not wear the collar, the dog can be trusted not to stray away from its master?s home or property. This is attained thru the training process.

Price and Use

This containment also hinders dogs from digging holes anywhere in the yard or jumping over the fanciful fence structure. If it makes an attempt to cross the limit, the dog gets a warning like mild static heart beat or light shock. Some fences are even transportable to guarantee pet safety during camping trips or out-of-town journeys and in certain circumstances where a dog might fail to comprehend its standard bounds.

The electric fence will help the dog understand its limitations or up to where it can play around. It keeps the dog safe from hazards like speeding automobiles, hostile people and animals. Indeed, there isn't any better alternative for the strong and cheap electric dog fences.

Update to iOS 6? Sure, but Temper Your Expectations

The astounding thing about the Apple ecosystem of iOS devices for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod is that its users can upgrade relatively easily -- and do -- to the latest and greatest version of Apple's mobile operating system. The upside is that even users on older hardware can get in on some of the new iOS love. The downside? Sometimes that love is mostly just a friendly hug.
