To celebrate another year of the tastebud-tantalising Comida di Buteco (Brazilian bar snack festival) we have three more recipes for you to try at home

Annual Brazilian bar snack festival, Comida di Buteco has officially finished. Take a look at three recipes from Belo Horizonte from this year's festival below.

Brazilian bruschettas

Ingredients:

3 small baguettes
2 tbsp mayonnaise
15g of capers
15g of Gorgonzola
15g of anchovies
6 fine slices of calabresa (Brazilian smoked sausage)
3 slices of ham
4 small tomatoes cut into slices
3 basil leaves
1 tbsp honey
dried garlic
finely chopped herbs
olive oil
250g of half cured grated cheese

For the skewers:

60g of goiabada casc?o (guava quince)
120g of half cured cheese

To prepare:

1. Cut the baguettes in half and slice open, spread on the mayonnaise and place in a roasting pan.

2. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the baguettes; on three of the 12 pieces place two slices of calabresa, Gorgonzola and some dried garlic. On another three place a slice of ham and capers; on another three the slices of anchovies, three tomatoes and some garlic; and on the remaining three some honey. Then to finish, drizzle olive oil over the top.

3. Place in the oven at 200?C until golden brown. Arrange on a plate and place the basil leaves on the bruschettas with capers.

To prepare the skewers:

1. Cut the cheese and goiabada into small pieces; skewer onto toothpicks.

Ingredients:

200g of ribs
200g of cupim (roasted or stewed cut of beef)
150g baby potatoes
vegetable stock
finely chopped herbs
olive oil
cayenne peppers
150g of Minas cheese

For the sauce:

2 tsp of butter
1 tbsp of sifted wheat flour
300ml of milk
150g of half cured Minas cheese
1 onion
1 bay leaf
1 pinch of grated nutmeg
1 pinch of salt

For the garnish:

mayonnaise
spring onions and parsley

To prepare:

1. Season the ribs and cook at a low heat until tender. Put aside.

2. Season and cook the cupim in a pressure cooker until tender. Put aside.

3. Cook the baby potatoes in vegetable stock, drain, then season with oil, finely chopped herbs, cayenne peppers and put aside.

4. Cut the Minas cheese into cubes and season with olive oil, finely chopped herbs, cayenne pepper and put aside.

To prepare the sauce:

1. Gently fry the butter and wheat flour in a pan until golden. Add the milk, onion, whole bay leaf, nutmeg and salt. Simmer until the wheat flour is cooked. Take off the heat and sieve.

2. Then place in the blender and blend with the Minas cheese.

How to serve:

1. Grill the cupim and the ribs on separate baking trays and place in gravy. Pour on the
cheese sauce and garnish with mayonnaise, spring onions and parsley.

Gerais Gold

Ingredients:

For creamed cassava with cheese:

500g cassava
1 cup of grated Minas cheese
1 cup of cream
1 roughly chopped onion
1 tbsp of butter
1 tbsp of garlic seasoning and salt
750ml of water

For sun-dried meat:

1kg braising meat
1 tbsp of salt
1 tbsp of creamy onion soup
2 tbsp of manteiga de garrafa (bottled butter)
300ml water
oil

For polenta balls stuffed with cheese:

500g cornmeal
500ml water
half a tbsp of salt
2 tbsp sour cassava flour
oil
Minas cheese cut into medium-sized cubes

To prepare:

1. Creamed cassava with cheese: blend the cooked cassava in the blender with the water.

2. Saut? the onion with the butter and season, then add the blended cassava. Cook until the mixture starts to boil, then add the Minas cheese and the cream at a low heat.

3. Sun-dried meat: cut the meat open like a large steak, sprinkle with salt on both sides and leave to marinate in the fridge for three days.

4. Cut into medium-sized cubes. Place the meat in a pressure cooker with the bottled butter and the creamy onion soup. Add the water and leave to cook for 10 minutes.

5. After the meat has cooked, deep fry.

To prepare the polenta balls stuffed with cheese:

1. Boil some salted water. Dissolve the cornmeal in a little water, then add to the boiled water. Blend for 20 minutes.

2. Pour the polenta into a bowl and mix in the sour cassava flour. Leave to cool.

3. To make the balls, take a piece of dough, open it up in your hand, place a cube of cheese inside and roll until it forms a ball. Tip ? moisten your hand with water
beforehand, to help with rolling the balls. Deep fry.

Brazilian chef, Eduardo Maya is the creator of Comida di Buteco ? an annual month-long bar food festival celebrated in Brazil during April. Originally just in Belo Horizonte, he decided to create a contest that would revitalise the local snack bars, so characteristic
to the city.?

Today, 12 years later, the competition has spread across the whole country with 16 cities in Brazil participating ? the newest addition being S?o Paulo. Food is taken very seriously in the city and offers visitors a fusion of flavours and tastes thanks to its multi-cultural residents.

If Adelson ? who, according to Bloomberg, is the 17th richest person in the world ? does get on board as a Romney contributor, it would be a significant capstone on what has been, on the whole, a pretty striking turnaround from Camp Gingrich. After a prolonged primary fight, in which it was clear both sides felt personally bruised, Gingrich has lately emerged as an active ? and pretty decent ? Romney surrogate.

On NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, he cheerfully parried questions about Romney's record at Bain (which Gingrich himself had famously attacked during the primary), and managed to seem relatively comfortable doing so. He praised Romney as "much tougher than I thought," and called himself "totally committed" to a Romney victory. Notably, Gingrich will be present at tonight's fundraiser with The Donald.?

Making nice with a onetime bitter rival for the nomination isn't all that uncommon in presidential politics ? particularly among longtime Washington types who understand that this is how the game is played. That doesn't mean it isn't difficult, but usually both sides seem to recognize that it's in everyone's interest to swallow their emotions and come together.

Abhijeed Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

MADRID (AP) ? Conservative Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted Monday that Spain's banking sector would not need an international rescue as concern over the bailout of nationalized lender Bankia sent its stock price plummeting while Spain's borrowing costs soared.

"There will be no rescue of the Spanish banking sector," Rajoy told a press conference.

However, he added that the government had no choice but to bail out Bankia which has been crippled by Spain's real estate collapse.

"We took the bull by the horns because the alternative was collapse," said Rajoy, stressing that Bankia clients' savings were now safer than ever.

Bankia, Spain's fourth-largest bank, is estimated to have ?32 billion in toxic assets and was effectively nationalized earlier this month when the government converted ?4.5 billion in rescue funds it gave last June into shares.

The lender's shares fell 28 per cent on opening in Madrid on Monday ? Bankia's first day back on the stock exchange following its announcement Friday that it would need the ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state aid to shore itself up against its bad loans, a far bigger bailout than expected. The shares, which recovered slightly by midday to trade 13 percent down at ?1.36, had closed at ?1.57 before trading was suspended Friday.

Bank of Spain estimates show Spain's lenders are sitting on some ?180 billion ($233 billion) in assets that could cause them losses. The government fears the cost of rescuing the country's vulnerable banks could overwhelm its own finances, which are already strained by a double-dip recession and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent, and force it to seek a rescue by the rest of Europe.

Among the chief concerns surrounding Bankia's request for state aid ? the largest in Spanish history ? is just how Spain plans to fund it. The country's borrowing costs have risen sharply over the past few weeks.

On Monday, Spain's interest rate, or yield, for 10-year bonds on the secondary market ? a key indicator of market confidence ? was up 13 basis points by midday to 6.42 percent. However, Rajoy said this had more to do with Europe and worries over Greece and dismissed suggestions it had anything to do with Bankia.

A rate of 7 percent is considered unsustainable over the long term and there is concern that Spain might soon be pushed join the ranks of Greece, Ireland and Portugal and seek an international bailout.

The Prime Minister said that the government had not yet decided how it would proceed in funding the Bankia bailout.

However, the Economy Ministry said earlier Monday that it is considering injecting government debt into Bankia's accounts. The bank could then turn to the European Central Bank and use those bonds as collateral to receive cash for the recapitalization.

Analysts said that such a technique would only prove to investors that the country is having difficulties raising money on the international debt markets and would therefore make them even more reluctant to buy Spanish debt.

"It sends a signal of a lack of confidence," said Mark Miller of Capital Economics in London.

Oscar Moreno of Madrid brokerage Renta4 said the government has little choice: either use this uncommon technique or simply ask the European Union for money to bail out the banking sector ? which Rajoy has vehemently ruled out as unnecessary.

Moreno said Bankia's share price drop ? and the rising bond yield ? showed investors the Spanish banking sector's woes are getting worse. Only last week, for instance, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said the government would inject about ?9 billion into Bankia.

"Basically, what the investor sees is that, with what has emerged with Bankia, more money is going to be needed than what was originally stated" than in two government decrees ordering banks to put aside a total of some ?80 billion in provisions to cushion against losses from real estate, Moreno added.

Spain's rocky financial situation has been made worse due to overspending by its semiautonomous regions. One of the regional governments, Catalonia, called for financial assistance last week, claiming it was running out of options to refinance its debts.

Asked about the fragile state of finances of some of Spain's regions, Rajoy said, "We are not going to let any region or financial entity fall because otherwise the country would fall."

Concern about the health of Europe's banks is a key constituent of the region's financial crisis. While Spanish banks suffer mainly from soured real estate investments, they and their counterparts across Europe also hold massive amounts of shaky government bonds. As the financial crisis worsens, those bonds lose value, hurting the banks.

The big fear is that if Greece eventually leaves the euro, confidence in other financially weak countries like Spain and Italy could fall, causing the value of their bonds to drop. Ultimately, the worry is that could undermine confidence in the system and create bank runs.

To avert such a disastrous scenario, financial experts are increasingly calling for a Europe-wide support system for the banks.

Annan 'horrified' by weekend massacre in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Special envoy Kofi Annan on Monday called on "every individual with a gun" in Syria to lay down arms, saying he was horrified by a weekend massacre that killed more than 100 people, including women and small children.

Annan arrived in Damascus Monday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior officials in the wake of the bloodshed Friday night in Houla, a collection of villages in the central province of Homs.

"I am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houla two days ago, which took so many innocent lives, children, women and men," Annan said as he arrived in the Syrian capital.

He called on all sides of the conflict to end the bloodshed, saying "this message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

The mass killings in Houla ? one of the deadliest single events in the 15-month-old uprising ? prompted sweeping international criticism of the Syrian regime, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame. Syria's strong ally, Russia, said both the government and the rebels were to blame.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Monday. "This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the governmental troops."

Lavrov spoke after talks with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague in Moscow.

Syria has strongly denied allegations that its forces carried out the killings, but the U.N. Security Council after an emergency session Sunday condemned government forces for shelling residential areas.

The brutality of the killings became clear in amateur videos posted online that showed scores of bodies, many of them young children, in neat rows and covered with blood and deep wounds. A later video showed the bodies, wrapped in white sheets, being placed in a sprawling mass grave.

The international rights group Human Rights Watch urged a swift investigation.

"There's no way a Syrian military commission can credibly investigate this horrendous crime when so much evidence suggests pro-government forces were responsible," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East and North Africa director for the New York-based group. "Annan should insist that Syria grant access to the U.N. commission of inquiry to investigate this and other grave crimes."

The United Nations estimates that 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011, but hundreds more have been killed since the U.N. provided that figure.

On Monday, activists said Syrian troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama until the early hours of the day, killing at least 24 people, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups said. Amateur videos showed a makeshift hospital where several people lay on the floor either dead or wounded. Further details were not immediately clear.

The Security Council issued a press statement Sunday that "condemned in the strongest possible terms" the killings in Houla. It blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas. It also condemned the killings of civilians "by shooting at close range and by severe physical abuse," but avoided saying who was responsible for these attacks.

The council's statement said the "outrageous use of force" against civilians violated international law and Syrian government commitments under previous U.N. resolutions to stop all violence, including the use of heavy weapons in populated areas. It said "those responsible for acts of violence must be held accountable," and asked the U.N. observer mission in Syria and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to investigate the attacks and report back to the council.

Britain and France had proposed issuing a press statement condemning the attack on civilians and pointing the finger at the Syrian government for Friday's massacre. But Russia called for an emergency council meeting saying it first wanted a briefing by Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission.

The massacre in Houla cast fresh doubts on the ability of an international peace plan put forward by Annan to end Syria's crisis, which is in its 15th month.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, the head of the unarmed U.N. observer mission, told the Security Council that U.N. observers at the scene now estimate 108 people were killed in Houla, U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told reporters outside the council chamber.

The U.N. counted 49 children and 34 women among the dead.

Activists from the Houla area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels after protests Friday. Some activists said pro-regime thugs later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that narrative Sunday, painting a vastly different picture.

Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said Syrian security forces were in their local bases Friday when they were attacked by "hundreds of heavily armed gunmen" firing mortars, heavy machine guns and anti-tank missiles, staring a nine-hour battle that killed three soldiers and wounded 16.

The soldiers fought back, but didn't leave their bases, he said.

"No Syrian tank or artillery entered this place where the massacres were committed," he said. "The security forces did not leave their places because they were in a state of self-defense."

Makdissi did not provide videos or other evidence to support his version of events, nor did he give a death toll. He said the government had formed a committee to investigate and share its findings with Annan, who is due to visit Damascus in the coming days.

Anti-Psychotic Drugs Found to Bust Cancer Cells

An anti-psychotic drug could treat cancer by neutralising the tumour's growth. Scientists from Cancer Research UK and McMaster University in Ontario have found that an anti-psychotic drug called thioridazine has the capability to cure cancer. The drug transforms cancer stem cells into non-cancerous cells, they have found.

Many researchers believe that cancer stem cells are the source of new cancer cells within a tumour. They claim that these cancer stem cells were resistant to current treatments, which explains why some cancers are so difficult to cure.

To find a cure for cancer stem cells, scientists had used pioneering robotics to test more than a dozen different compounds to identify a drug which could cure or eradicate the cancer stem cells. They found that the anti-psychotic drug does not eradicate the cancer stem cells but converts the cancer stem cells into non cancerous cells, that too, without damaging healthy cells.

"The unusual aspect of our finding is the way this human-ready drug actually kills cancer stem cells by changing them into cells that are non-cancerous," said Dr Mick Bhatia, scientific director at the McMaster's Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute.

"Now we can test thousands of compounds, eventually defining a candidate drug that has little effect on normal stem cells but kills the cells that start the tumour," he added.

Researchers are planning a clinical trial of thioridazine in combination with standard anti-cancer drugs for adults with acute myeloid leukaemia.

"It's too early to say whether thioridazine could be used to treat cancer patients, but the research opens up some interesting questions for further investigation. Use of thioridazine at dose levels required to treat cancer may well result in significant side effects that limit or prohibit its use. Further research will be needed before we can be sure," said Dr Tim Somervaille, researcher at Cancer Research UK, in a statement.

Ensure that the Contractor is appropriately licensed and is a Licensed Construction Supervisor and/or a Registered Home Improvement Contractor.

Ensure that the contractor has adequate liability insurance and workers compensation insurance.

Ask the contractor for a written list of his/her three most recent projects with names, telephone numbers and addresses of the owners.

Call the owners and ask questions as to the performance of the contractor.

Check with your local better business bureau, the Board of Building Regulations and Standards and the Office of the Attorney General to find out whether the contractor has any complaints filed against the contractor or whether or not any disciplinary action has been taken against the contractor.

Once you have selected a contractor and before you sign any agreement or contract;

Do not enter into any construction agreements without a written contract. Before signing a contract make sure that your attorney reviews the contract.

Ensure that you authorize the contractor to apply for the building permit as your agent. Registered Home Improvment Contractors are required by law to apply for all building permits which are subject to the Home Improvement Regiatration Law.

The BBRS strongly cautions building owners against applying for their own building permit . Reputable contractors will apply for the permit, acting as the owner?s agent and with the owner?s written authority. Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET: The mother of three children found abandoned in a shed in Portland, Ore., on Thursday has been located, police said Friday.

"We thank everyone who helped with information," the department said in a statement. "We do not need any additional tips.? There will be no more details released about this case as it is still under investigation."

The oldest of the kids, a boy, is approximately?3 years old. A girl, about 2, and an infant girl, believed to be somewhere between 8 and 15 months, were found with the boy Thursday morning, authorities said.

Around 9:30 a.m., a man called 911 to report hearing children's voices from a shed behind his house in Southeast Portland.

The shed was on the property of a vacant residence, police said in a statement.

Officers said there were homeless people "on the premises" who told them the children were abandoned there the night before by a woman they believed to be their mother.

The Department of Human Services took them into protective custody and gave them medical evaluations.

A resident on the street where the kids were discovered said she had noticed strangers walking across from her home on Thursday morning, where the empty shed is.

"We have a real homeless problem in our neighborhood, so I keep an eye across the street," Judy Baxter, a homeowner on Southeast Rhine Street, told?oregonlive.com.

She said she saw a man and a woman walk into the backyard of a vacant house on Thursday morning, so she called the property owner to suggest he report them. Soon after, police arrived.

Baxter told oregonlive.com that officials led the kids out of the shed through pouring rain; the toddlers held the hands of state welfare workers, while a police officer carried the infant out.

The kids were wearing coats and had backpacks, she said. Authorities who responded to the scene gave them stuffed animals, she told oregonlive.com.

Jennifer Estus, who lives next to the vacant property, told oregonlive.com that homeless people often sleep in the driveway behind the home.

Police said the two older children weigh 28 pounds, and the infant is 15 pounds. All three have olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

'G.I. Joe' gets new marching orders, moves to 2013

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Just a month before its June release in the U.S., Paramount Pictures delayed the debut of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" by nine months after another movie based on a Hasbro plaything was trounced at the box office by "The Avengers."

Paramount on Wednesday pushed back the release of the "G.I. Joe" sequel from June 29 until March 29, 2013, in order to adapt the movie for 3-D screens, according to Paramount's executive vice president of publicity, Katie Martin Kelley.

The move comes after "Battleship," based on the Hasbro board game, debuted at No. 2 at the North American box office with $25.5 million in ticket sales, behind the still-strong "Avengers," which brought in a whopping $55.6 million in its third weekend of release.

Action films often get most of their revenue from 3-D showings, which cost a few dollars more per ticket and can boost a movie's prospects to make its money back.

March has proven to be a big month for movies because there's a lack of big-budget competition, according to Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office division of Hollywood.com. This March, "The Hunger Games" premiered on March 12 and went on to make $629 million worldwide.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" also suffered from a lack of strong buzz online, according to Ben Carlson, president of market tracking firm Fizziology.
