EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Divorce at a younger age hurts people's health more than divorce later in life, according to a new study by a Michigan State University sociologist.

Hui Liu said the findings, which appear in the research journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest older people have more coping skills to deal with the stress of divorce.

"It's clear to me that we need more social and family support for the younger divorced groups," said Liu, assistant professor of sociology. "This could include divorce counseling to help people handle the stress, or offering marital therapy or prevention programs to maintain marital satisfaction."

Liu analyzed the self-reported health of 1,282 participants in Americans' Changing Lives, a long-term national survey. She measured the gap in health status between those who remained married during the 15-year study period and those who transitioned from marriage to divorce, at certain ages and among different birth cohorts, or generations.

Liu found the gap was wider at younger ages. For example, among people born in the 1950s, those who got divorced between the ages of 35 and 41 reported more health problems in relation to their continuously married counterparts than those who got divorced in the 44 to 50 age range.

From a generational perspective, the negative health impact was stronger for baby boomers than it was for older generations a finding that surprised Liu.

"I would have expected divorce to carry less stress for the younger generation, since divorce is more prevalent for them," she said.

Liu said this may be because the pressure to marry and stay married was stronger for older generations, and so those who did divorce may have been among the most unhappily married and thus felt a certain degree of relief when they did divorce.

Overall, the study found that those who transition from marriage to divorce experience a more rapid health decline than those who remain married. However, those who remained divorced during the entire study period showed no difference than those who remained married.

"This suggests it is not the status of being married or divorced, per se, that affects health, but instead is the process of transitioning from marriage to divorce that is stressful and hurts health," Liu said.

Rabbit at Rest

Exactly three years after his death, it?s sad to see that John Updike has subtly fallen out of fashion, that he is left off best novels lists like the Modern Library?s, and that a faint sense of disapproval clings to his reputation, even as his immense talent is recognized.

In fact, his immense talent is part of what people seemed to find suspect about him in the years before his death. Critics and writers hold the fact that he writes beautiful sentences against him, as if his writing is too well crafted, too flamboyantly, extravagantly good. James Wood wrote a decade ago, ?He is a prose writer of great beauty, but that prose confronts one with the question of whether beauty is enough, and whether beauty always conveys what a novelist must convey.? Here one has to wonder about that special handbook of ?What a Novelist Must Convey,? and the rules and regulations contained therein.

And yet many other writers over the years have harbored the same odd objection. Take this critique in the New Republic (PDF): ?He simply can?t pass up any opportunity to tap dance in prose.? The idea is that we should somehow distrust Updike because he is too good a writer. The word stylish in this way of thinking becomes a slur, as does the word beautiful.?

The faux-democratic ideal of plain-spokenness, the sense that a novelist should not write too beautifully or he sacrifices some vaguely articulated, semi-mystical claim to honesty, is not a million miles away from the Sarah Palin-ish suspicion of east coast liberals, or a Harvard education, or people who know the dates of wars. This is not to say that writing beautifully or elaborately is necessary for good fiction, but that one can?t deny that there are writers (Henry James, Nabokov, Flaubert) who write beautiful or elaborate sentences without any sacrifice to some mysterious, indefinable fictional mission.

U.N. says won't change judge for Cambodia war crimes court (Reuters)

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) ? The United Nations will send its investigating judge to resume work at the Khmer Rouge war crimes tribunal in Cambodia, despite moves by the government to have him replaced, a top envoy said Wednesday.

Cambodia had no authority to block Swiss Laurent Kasper-Ansermet from taking up the post under a 2003 agreement between the government and the United Nations, said David Scheffer, special expert on U.N. assistance to the Khmer Rouge trials.

Scheffer said Kasper-Ansermet would go to work on investigating two more unidentified suspects in the highly controversial cases being referred to as 003 and 004, which relate to their roles in the "year zero" revolution that killed as many as 2.2 million Cambodians from 1975-1979.

The two cases have been a source of acrimony in the tribunal and have led to heated disagreements and several resignations. Cambodia's government is vehemently against indicting the two suspects, who are widely believed to be former Khmer Rouge military commanders.

"We do look forward to the judge returning to this country from his commitment in Switzerland this week and we look forward to him working on building a credible case files in case 3 and 4," Scheffer told reporters after meeting government officials.

"Recognizing that we believe in our interpretation of the (2003) agreement, namely regardless of that breach, the judge has full authority to operate as the international investigating judge," he said.

Critics have accused Cambodia's government of trying to prevent further cases from being investigated and Prime Minister Hun Sen, himself a former Khmer Rouge soldier, has even warned of a civil war if more indictments are issued.

CONTROVERSIAL CASES

The government said Monday its judicial bodies had full authority to reject judges if they did not consider them suitable and the United Nations was "confused" about an agreement it signed.

It gave no response Wednesday to Scheffer's announcement that the judge would return. Cambodian officials have said the government felt Kasper-Ansermet was unsuitable because he had used his Twitter account to draw attention to a debate over whether to purse cases 003 and 004.

The hybrid U.N.-Cambodian court is hearing case 002, involving three top members of the ultra-Maoist Khmer Rouge regime, accused of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot died in 1998.

Prosecutors have appealed the unexplained decision by a previous international judge Siegfried Blunk -- who resigned in October -- not to indict the two additional suspects, despite what rights groups say is overwhelming evidence to build a case against them.

Blunk's official reason for quitting was political interference.

The court, set up in 2005, has handed down just one sentence, a 35-year jail term commuted to 19 years for Kaing Guek Eav, also know as Duch, for his role in the deaths of more than 14,000 people at a torture center in Phnom Penh.

His appeal is due to be heard on February 3.

US stocks mixed as Greece negotiates to cut debt (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks swung between small gains and losses Monday while traders kept an eye on talks in Europe to cut Greece's crushing debt load and prevent what could be a worldwide financial crisis.

European stocks and the euro rose after the continent's finance ministers put pressure on banks that hold Greek government bonds to accept a 50 percent lower face value and lower interest rates.

The Greek stock market gained 5 percent, and markets in Germany, France, Spain and Britain all advanced less than 1 percent. The euro rose more than a penny to $1.302, close to its highest level against the dollar this year.

Negotiators are trying to prevent a disorderly default by Greece in March. The direst scenarios include a credit crisis similar to what happened after the Lehman Brothers investment house fell in 2008.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 44 points in the first hour of trading, drifted lower to a loss of 54 points, then floated higher. It was down 17 points at 12,703 just after 2 p.m. EST.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down less than a point at 1,314. The Nasdaq composite index was down three points at 2,783.

Stocks are off to a strong start in 2012. Investors' biggest fears have slowly faded. Stronger than expected job growth in the U.S. and falling borrowing costs for European governments have helped the S&P 500 index post gains on 11 of 13 trading days.

For the year, the Dow is up about 4 percent, the S&P about 4.5 percent.

Maybe the biggest boon to markets this year is the lack of scary headlines, said Jeff Lancaster, a principal at the investment firm Bingham, Osborn & Scarborough.

"When everybody is feeling distressed, anxious and worried as they were at the end of last year, it doesn't take a lot of good news for the mood to change," he said. "It just takes a diminishing quantity of bad news."

Energy companies made big moves. Chesapeake Energy Corp., the No. 2 producer of natural gas in the United States, jumped 6 percent after it said it plans to cut production, a response to the recent slump in natural gas prices.

Natural gas futures rose 7.4 percent to $2.57 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gas futures were trading above $4 just six months ago.

Stocks of other gas producers shot higher. Southwestern Energy Co. jumped 8.7 percent, the biggest gain in the S&P 500. Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. was right behind, rising 7.4 percent.

Apache Corp., a producer of oil and gas, added 1 percent after it said it plans to buy Cordillera Energy Partners in a $2.85 billion deal. It's the largest merger announced in the U.S. this year.

The price of oil rose 67 cents to $99 per barrel. The European Union tightened sanctions against Iran by banning the purchase of Iranian oil. Iran threatened to block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-sixth of world's oil exports.

Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry, sank 6.5 percent after its new chief executive said no drastic changes are needed. The company's founders announced they were stepping down as co-CEOs late Sunday.

Top Iraqi Shiite cleric urges end to crisis (AP)

BAGHDAD ? An aide to Iraq's most prominent Shiite cleric is urging politicians on both sides of the country's sectarian divide to end a government crisis, as fears of civil war rise a month after the U.S. military withdrawal.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani's aide Ahmed al-Safi said during a Friday sermon in the holy city of Karbala that the war-ravaged country "cannot bear further tensions among politicians."

Sistani, revered among Iraqi Shiites, normally exerts his influence through sermons and statements made by his aides.

The crisis erupted last month after the Shiite-led government issued an arrest warrant against the Sunni vice president on terrorism charges. In protest, the Sunni-backed bloc has been boycotting parliament and Cabinet sessions.

Meshaal planning to step down as leader of Hamas (Reuters)

GAZA (Reuters) ? Khaled Meshaal, the top political official of Palestinian Islamist faction Hamas that controls the Gaza Strip, will not seek reelection when a vote to choose its leadership is held soon, the group said on Saturday.

A Hamas statement said Council of his intention to step down, wanting to stress the path of democracy and bring in new blood to the leadership but the Shura Council will make the final call," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in Gaza.

Meshaal, 55, has been based in Damascus since 2001 fearing for his safety and restriction of movement in Gaza. He has been Iranian-backed Hamas's chief leader since 1996, responsible for setting policy and planning attacks against Israel.

Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement which holds sway in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, in a brief civil war in 2007.

Hamas and Fatah agreed to bury the hatchet and end their hostility with a reconciliation deal last year, but their agreement has yet to be implemented in deed or in spirit.

Israel, the United States and the European Union consider Hamas a terrorist group opposed to peace and committed to violence to destroy what it calls the "Zionist entity." Israel has said that a Palestinian unity government which includes Hamas will end peace hopes.

Meshaal's supporters among Palestinians and in Arab countries consider him to be a pragmatic leader who has attracted political support at home and financial support abroad for the movement that was founded in 1987.

Israel blames Meshaal for planning many attacks that have killed hundreds of its soldiers and civilians. In 1997 he was the subject of a failed assassination attempt by Mossad agents, an incident that caused a rift in Israel-Jordan relations.

Late Jordanian King Hussein forced Israel to supply the antidote for a lethal injection Meshaal was given, and to release the group's founder, Ahmed Yassin, from prison in 1997. Israel assassinated Yassin in an air strike in 2004.

Many Hamas operatives who were based in Syria have recently returned to Gaza as the group assesses the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime which is mired in a bloody 10-month-long uprising. Hamas has refused to openly back Assad.

RIFTS COULD EMERGE

A Gaza political analyst said that if Meshaal was replaced, hidden internal rifts could surface and the Hamas's Gaza leaders may take over as prime decision-makers from those in exile.

"If Meshaal insists on stepping down, it could pave the way for the rise of other power bases and the issue of who should lead Hamas - officials in Gaza or abroad - will surface," Hani Habib told Reuters.

He said that disputes between the leaders in Gaza and abroad worsened after Meshaal angered those in Gaza by agreeing to reconciliation with Fatah and giving Abbas a year to pursue peace talks with Israel.

Habib said he did not expect a more radical successor.

"In any circumstances I believe that the general trend within Hamas and political Islam in the world is now to show more flexibility towards engaging with the world," he said.

Microsoft 2Q beats Street despite soft PC market (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Microsoft Corp. battled through a weak PC market to post flat earnings in the final quarter of 2011, boosting sales of servers, Xbox games and its Office productivity software while trimming losses at its Bing search engine.

The quarter wasn't as bad as some industry analysts feared, given that flooding in Thailand constricted the supply of hard disk drives used in personal computers. Microsoft also witnessed a wave of consumers buying Apple Inc.'s popular iPad, which cut into sales of miniature laptop PCs known as netbooks.

Still, Microsoft's earnings modestly topped expectations. That was largely thanks to strong business demand for software and services, and an upbeat holiday season for the Xbox game console and the accompanying Kinect motion controller.

Its shares rose 70 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $28.82 in after-hours trading Thursday.

Net income in the company's second quarter through December came to $6.62 billion, down slightly from the $6.63 billion a year ago. Earnings per share came to 78 cents, up a penny from a year ago, as the outstanding share count fell.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $20.89 billion.

Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting slightly weaker earnings of 76 cents per share. Sales were below the $20.92 billion expected.

"People were afraid it was going to be much, much worse," said Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC.

Gillis said cost controls and a second-consecutive quarter of reduced losses at Bing helped results. Continuing growth in its Office software division was also encouraging, he said.

The company said PC sales were down an estimated 2 percent to 4 percent from a year earlier. Netbook sales made up just 2 percent of the overall PC market, down from 8 percent a year ago as the iPad decimated the lightweight portable computer category.

Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., is now looking ahead to the release of Windows 8, an operating system that should work similarly over PCs and tablet computers.

It is also pinning hopes on a new category of PCs called Ultrabooks, which mimic Apple's MacBook Air in form, but which may also utilize a touch screen that would work on the upcoming Windows. A beta version of Windows 8 is due out late next month.

"We're on track, we feel really good about where we are on the product, and the next super important milestone is the beta release," said Bill Koefoed, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations.

Although analysts expect another weak quarter for PCs, sales are seen strengthening as the year goes on.

The big question is whether Microsoft can deliver results on a whole range of new products from its Windows Phone smartphone operating system to Windows 8 and its Office 365 suite of cloud-based productivity applications.

"It's a year of the product cycle" for Microsoft, said Josh Olson, a technology analyst for Edward Jones. "How well they bring those product offerings to market will say a lot about the Microsoft story this year."

LG Introduces Optimus Pad LTE; dual-core and no mention of Android 4.0

After an under-performing 2011, Korean-based LG?is trying to start the year by stepping up its game and introducing its first 4G LTE tablet ? The Optimus Pad LTE.

The Optimus Pad LTE has an 8.9-inch True HD IPS display (1280x768p) and measures a mere 9.3 mm in thinness. It also weighs 497 grams, which would be 69 grams less than the super-light Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Let?s take a deeper look at the specs to see what we have here:

  • Android 3.2 Honeycomb
  • Qualcomm 1.5GHz Dual-Core / Dual Channel Processor
  • 8.9-inch IPS True HD Display (1280x768p)
  • 8 MP rear-facing camera / 2 MP front-facing camera
  • 32 GB of internal storage (supports microSD cards of up to 32 GB)
  • 6,800 mAh battery
  • HDMI, DLNA compatible

Not bad, but we simply do not know how well it could hold up against the upcoming Tegra 3 tablets. These are also coming with affordable prices, making it harder not only for LG, but for every manufacturer to compete. Not to mention the fact that this press release makes no mention of an update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

At this point in the game, tablets should not be released without at least the promise of an upcoming update to Android 4.0. Not all LG customers have been happy with updates (or lack thereof) on their phones and tablets, so this might be something to consider before purchasing the Optimus Pad.

The software version and price are our only concerns, though. If LG makes things right in those departments, this wouldn?t really be a bad tablet to consider, especially if you are a lover of 4G LTE speeds. The specs are pretty decent as well, and the thinness and weight make this device very attractive.

We do not yet know exact prices or release dates. The Optimus Pad LTE will be first launching in Korea, though, followed by the rest of the world soon afterwards.

What do you guys say? Would you go for this LTE tablet, or would you rather wait for a quad-core, Ice Cream Sandwich pad? Let us know what you think and hit the press release button for more details.

Meet the Needs of Consumers? Faster Lifestyles

SEOUL, Jan. 18, 2012 ? LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its first LTE-capable tablet, the Optimus Pad LTE. Initially launching in Korea, LG has equipped the tablet with both LTE technology and True HD IPS display, the two features that have helped LG differentiate its latest smartphone, Optimus LTE, from the competition.

?With tablets generating five times more traffic than the average smartphone, it?s not a huge jump to assume that tablet users need and want faster connectivity,? said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. ?The combination of LG?s LTE technology with the tablet form factor is a clear advantage for consumers who use a tablet as their primary consumption device when on the move.?

Boasting the best-in-class in the tablets, LG Optimus Pad LTE provides the ultimate user environment to enjoy HD multimedia with a 1280 x 720 True HD IPS display and 8 megapixel camera for shooting high definition video. The Optimus Pad LTE is also the world?s first tablet to support an SD memory card expandable to 32GB, recognizing the importance multimedia would play for owners of this device.

Along with these features, the Optimus Pad LTE offers easy-to-use controls and functions such as the Smart Movie Editor for editing pictures and videos more easily. Moreover, Web Duet allows for e-mailing, messaging and SNS sharing with search functions, and On-Screen Phone (OSP) ensures compatibility with LG smartphones.

LG Optimus Pad LTE is extremely portable and aesthetically pleasing, weighing in at a svelte 479g and only 9.34mm thin. Equipped with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor running Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS, LG?s newest tablet guarantees superior performance. AcceleGlove teaches you sign language: we go hands-in (video)

While we wouldn't say worthy devices at CES are rare, it's always welcome when we're dodging those middling tablets and iPhones cases scattered across Las Vega's premier tech event. Made by the Institute for Disabilities Research and Training (IDRT) and funded by the National Science Foundation, the AcceleGlove ties into a camera and PC software to act as an input device for American Sign Language. Currently, software extends to learning functionality, with a tutorial input program and more advanced translation software both on show this week. Accelerometers within the glove measuring finger movement, with the camera able to gauge distance and dynamic movement.

We strapped on the AcceleGlove and gave the fundamental program a go, training our hands to spell out the alphabet (with a fair bit of help from inventor Jose Hernandez-Rebollar. It's pretty pacey and certainly detects subtle changes that distinguish letters. The two-way gesture translator can apparently translate over 25,000 english words and phrases into ASL, with the ability to translate gestures into both text and speech.

Future aims for the device include translating commands to PC operating systems, tablets and TVs. More functional applications include integrating hand signal communication into military and medical first response units, when conditions make both visual and audio communication difficult. The current iteration of both the glove and software are available now from IDRT for $300. Hit up the source for more info, or check out our nascent signing skills in our hands-in after the break.

Panetta assures Afghans of full probe into video (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Pentagon leaders scrambled Thursday to contain damage from an Internet video purporting to show four Marines urinating on Taliban corpses ? an act that appears to violate international laws of warfare and further strains U.S.-Afghan relations.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Afghan President Hamid Karzai to offer assurances of a full investigation and the top Marine general promised an internal probe as well as a criminal one. Investigators moved quickly to identify and interview at least two of the four Marines. They were members of a battalion that fought for seven months in former Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan.

Their unit, the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, returned from Helmand province to its home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., last September. Marine officials said that a battalion officer confirmed to investigators on Thursday, based on his examination of the video, that the four men depicted urinating had been members of the battalion. Two have since moved on to other units.

As the video spread across the Internet in postings and re-postings, U.S. officials joined with Afghans in calling it shocking, deplorable, inhumane and a breach of military standards of conduct. It shows men in Marine combat gear standing in a semicircle urinating on the bodies of three men in standard Afghan clothing, one whose chest was covered in blood.

It's not certain whether the dead were Taliban fighters, civilians or someone else.

The incident will likely further hurt ties with Karzai's government and complicate negotiations over a strategic partnership arrangement meant to govern the presence of U.S. troops and advisers in Afghanistan after most international combat troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

It also comes at a delicate time in relations among the United States, Afghanistan's elected government and the Taliban insurgency fighting for both territorial control and cultural and religious preeminence in Afghanistan. The U.S. is trying to foster peace talks between the Karzai government and the Pakistan-based Taliban high command, and has made unprecedented offers to build trust with the insurgents, including the planned opening of a Taliban political office to oversee talks.

Anti-American sentiment is already on the rise in Afghanistan, especially among Afghans who have not seen improvements to their daily lives despite billions of dollars in international aid. They also have deplored the accidental killing of civilians during NATO airstrikes and argue that foreign troops have culturally offended the Afghan people, mostly when it comes to activities involving women and the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

Pentagon officials said the criminal investigation would likely look into whether the Marines violated laws of war, which include prohibitions against photographing or mishandling bodies and detainees. It also appeared to violate the U.S. Uniform Code of Military Justice, which governs conduct. Thus, some or all of the four Marines could face a military court-martial or other disciplinary action.

Karzai called the video "completely inhumane." The Afghan Defense Ministry called it "shocking." And the Taliban issued a statement accusing U.S. forces of committing numerous "indignities" against the Afghan people.

U.S. officials said a military criminal investigation was being led by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the law enforcement arm of the Navy. The Marines will do their own internal investigation.

Panetta said the actions depicted in the brief video were inexcusable.

"I have seen the footage, and I find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms," Panetta's statement said. "Those found to have engaged in such conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent."

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, said he was deeply disturbed by the video and worried that it would erode the reputation of the entire military, not just the Marine Corps.

A veterans group, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, noted the video was the act of a small number of Marines and said it did not reflect the behavior of the millions who have served honorably.

"Our troops and veterans are already facing enormous challenges and stereotypes both overseas and at home, and we encourage the public and media worldwide to refrain from rushing to stereotypes," the group said in a statement.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, the top civilian executive of the Marines and Navy, said it was "appalling and outrageously offensive," and Marine Commandant James Amos called it "wholly inconsistent with the high standards of conduct and warrior ethos" demanded in the Corps.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was aware of the story but may not have seen the video.

Asked how the development might affect U.S.-Afghan-Taliban peace efforts, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton did not directly reply.

"The United States remains strongly committed to helping build a secure, peaceful, prosperous, democratic future for the people of Afghanistan," she said. "And we will continue to support efforts that will be Afghan-led and Afghan-owned to pursue the possibility of reconciliation and peace."

On the streets of Afghanistan, the reaction was cool.

"If these actions continue, people will not like them (the Americans) anymore and there will be uprising against them," Mohammad Qayum, said while watching a television news story about the video that was airing in a local restaurant in Kabul.

Ahmad Naweed, a shopkeeper in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban insurgency, said, "On the one hand, the Americans present themselves as friends of Afghanistan and ... they also try to have peace talks with the Taliban. So we don't know what kind of political game they are playing in Afghanistan."

This kind of embarrassment dispersed over the Internet is not new for the Pentagon.

Over the years of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, officials periodically have been stunned by the troops' penchant for taking photos or videos of themselves in acts ranging from criminal to simply stupid.

Outrage spread instantly across the globe in 2004 over the release of photos taken by a group of U.S. military police abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The troops were grinning and posing beside naked detainees stacked in a pyramid, held on a leash and so on.

In 2008, a Marine was kicked out of the service after being videotaped throwing a puppy off a cliff while on patrol in Iraq and joking about it as the animal yelped.

The first contest between LSU and Alabama was hyped as the "game of the century." The intensity will only grow now that the national championship is on the line.
LSU capped off an undefeated regular season with a victory over Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.
Alabama also had a very successful season, and with the exception of the 9-6 overtime loss to the LSU Tigers the Crimson Tide won every game by at least two touchdowns.
There is a tremendous amount of talent that will be on the field, as each sideline is filled with future NFL players, but the key to these teams is how well the defenses play as a unit.

PFT: Body of Packers coordinator's son found

Greg Jennings, Jordan PughAP

Having played with both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, Packers receiver Greg Jennings says he leans toward Rodgers as the better quarterback.

?They both bring different things to the table, but honestly right now I definitely have to go with . . . Aaron, his body of work at such a young age, his attention to detail, his discipline, I think it?s really second to none ? its un-paralleled,? Jennings told Ian O?Connor on ESPN New York 1050.

It?s easy to see why Jennings would be happier with Rodgers, because he?s catching more passes from Rodgers. In two seasons as one of Favre?s starting receivers, Jennings averaged 49 catches for 776 yards. In four seasons with Rodgers, Jennings has averaged 73 catches for 1,155 yards.

But is it really fair to say Rodgers has a superior body of work to Favre? After all, Favre played 20 seasons, won the MVP award at the end of three of those seasons, and still has about 55,000 more career passing yards than Rodgers.

What Jennings is really saying is that Rodgers is playing at a higher level right now than Favre ever played at, and that?s a reasonable assessment.

?You haven?t really found a QB that has done it the way [Rodgers] has done it,? Jennings said. ?I mean you have the young guys that are coming out and they?re making a huge impact in this game . . . but his attention to detail and his discipline to be perfect or so close to perfect I think that?s really going to separate himself . . . his study habits are . . . they speak volume for themselves.?

And that?s why Jennings is speaking up for Rodgers.

Sprint gets 4G LTE, Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper: It's official

In the midst of a rival's developer conference, Sprint's snuck out an official page for its (already leaked) 4G network. Anyone living in Dallas, Atlanta, Houston and San Antonio can expect to see 4G coverage pop up alongside "improved 3G coverage." The first device to land will be an LTE-flavored Galaxy Nexus, and according to the official page, Google Wallet is coming along for the ride. The illusive LG Viper is also apparently riding those 4G waves, alongside a new router that'll connect to 3G and LTE signals.

[Thanks Rahim]

Sony's Kaz Hirai to step up as president as early as April

Nikkei is reporting that Sony will be promoting current Executive Deputy President Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai to president as soon as April, while Howard Stringer is expected to remain chairman and CEO of the company. As you may recall, Sony started its search for a new president as far back as November 2010, and with Kaz's two promotions last year (to Executive Deputy President in April and to Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman in September), it isn't surprising that he's the chosen one to pick up some of Sir Howard's work. It'll be a while before we see the consequences of this promotion, and anything can happen between now and the board meeting as early as next month to seal the deal; but here's hoping that under Kaz, Sony will go easy on all these new memory card formats while it further unifies its various groups within the corporation.
